Maareb
Maareb
Maareb (Hebrew: מערב, from root ערב meaning evening) is the Hebrew term for the western quarter, the direction of the setting sun. In Kabbalistic and Hermetic traditions, it is associated with Path 23 on the Tree of Life, which connects the sephiroth Hod and Yesod (or Hod and Netzach in some variants). This path is known as the Path of the Moon, and its planetary correspondence is the Moon, its elemental correspondence is Water, and its angelic correspondence is Gabriel. Symbolically, Maareb represents twilight, judgment, balance, and the culmination of daily cycles, often linked to the astrological sign Libra and the planet Venus (though in Liber 777 the Moon is primary).
Position on the Tree of Life
On the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the 32 paths are each assigned a direction. Path 23, running between Hod (Glory) and Yesod (Foundation) on the left pillar, is designated as Maareb (West). This path is also called the Path of the Moon, reflecting its association with the lunar sphere. In the four quarters system of the Tetragrammaton, Maareb corresponds to the letter Vau (ו), the third letter of the divine name, which is often linked to the element of Water and the passive, receptive principle.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
In Liber 777, the planetary correspondence for Path 23 is the Moon, which rules the night, tides, and emotions. The elemental correspondence is Water, the fluid, receptive substance. Thus, Maareb embodies the lunar, watery nature. In broader astrological symbolism, the West is also associated with Libra (balance) and Venus (love, beauty), but here the Moon takes precedence.
Historical Context
Maareb appears in the Hebrew Bible as the direction of the setting sun, for instance in Genesis 28:14 ("and you shall spread abroad to the west"). In later Kabbalistic and Hermetic writings, the four cardinal directions are personified by archangels: Raphael (East), Michael (South), Gabriel (West), and Uriel (North). Thus, Maareb is the domain of Gabriel, the angel of revelation, prophecy, and judgment. In alchemical symbolism, the West corresponds to the stage of coagulation, the fixation of the volatile, and in Tarot, it is associated with the suit of Cups (Water) and the card of The Moon, which reflects the lunar and watery nature of this direction.
Summary
Within the Liber 777 correspondences, Maareb is a key directional symbol, linking the physical west with the lunar path on the Tree of Life, and embodying the qualities of balance, receptivity, and the closing of cycles. Its correspondences include the Moon, Water, Gabriel, and the path 23, making it a significant node in the esoteric map of directions and spiritual energies.
