The Sword and the Serpent · Path 23

13-й путь Змея

13-y put Zmeya (Thirteenth Path of the Serpent) denotes a specific stage along the serpent’s re-ascent through the Sephiroth, the counterpart to the descending lightning flash. In the Russian rendering of the table, each of the twenty-two paths numbered from 11 to 32 is named as a sequential segment of this spiral return, the 13th path being the third such segment counted from the bottom up. The number 13 here refers purely to the ordinal in the series of “ways of the Serpent,” not to the standard Qabalistic path number, which is 23.

Position on the Tree of Life

The 13th Path of the Serpent is correlated with Path 23 of the Thirty-two Paths of Wisdom. On the Tree, Path 23 runs from Hod (Splendor, eighth Sephirah) to Geburah (Severity, fifth Sephirah). This diagonal connection crosses the Pillar of Severity, moving from the realm of intellect and communication (Hod) upward to the sphere of judgment, strength, and martial force (Geburah). As a stage on the Serpent’s return, it is the point where the initiated force that has been gathered in the lower centers of Hod now rises with intensified will into the crucible of Geburah.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the Western esoteric tradition, Path 23 is attributed to the planet Mars. The 13th Path of the Serpent therefore operates under the astrological signature of Mars: force, courage, severance, and directed aggression. This Martian energy supplies the necessary impetus for the Serpent to pierce the barriers of passivity and to establish the concentration required for higher transformation. The serpent-return here becomes a martial discipline.

Historical context

The full series of the “Paths of the Serpent” appears in the Liber 777 tables constructed by Aleister Crowley and later expanded by Israel Regardie. The schema presents two simultaneous diagrams: the Sword (or Lightning Flash) descending the thirty-two paths from Kether to Malkuth, and the Serpent ascending from Malkuth back to Kether. Each numbered “Flash” or “Path of the Serpent” corresponds to a specific step in the descending or ascending sequence. The 13th Path of the Serpent belongs to the ascending series, counted from Malkuth upward.

This dual-diagram method draws on older Qabalistic imagery: the serpent is Nehushtan (the bronze serpent lifted by Moses), the Ouroboros of alchemy, and the coiled Kundalini of Tantra. Crowley explicitly linked the Serpent’s path to the awakening of the magical will, so that each numbered Serpent-path represents a conscious stage in the magician’s ascent. The 13th Path of the Serpent (Path 23) is thus a point of martial purification: the serpent enters Geburah and sheds the last remnants of indecision through the fiery agency of Mars.

Place in the Table of 777

In the row for “The Sword and the Serpent,” the cell for scale step 23 (Path 23) contains the entry “13-y put Zmeya” (13th Path of the Serpent). This is the third ascending step. Beneath it lies the 12th Path of the Serpent (Path 22, attributed to Libra), and above it the 14th Path of the Serpent (Path 24, attributed to Virgo). The table thus positions the 13th Path of the Serpent as the cardinal, Mars-ruled phase that turns balance (Libra) into active force, preparing the way for the service-oriented precision of Virgo.
