Gad
Gad is the seventh son of Jacob, born to Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid, and the eponymous ancestor of the Tribe of Gad. His name, from the Hebrew root gad (גַּד), means “fortune” or “troop,” reflecting Leah’s exclamation at his birth: “What fortune!” (Genesis 30:11). In the Qabalistic schema of Liber 777, Gad stands as the tribe assigned to Path 15, the path of Heh (the Emperor) on the Tree of Life.
Position on the Tree of Life
Path 15 connects Chokmah (Wisdom) to Binah (Understanding) on the Tree of Life. This path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Heh and the Tarot trump The Emperor. As the tribe placed on this path, Gad embodies the assertive, structured energy of the Emperor—a force of ordered expansion and martial discipline.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Path 15 is governed by Aries, the cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars. This astrological attribution aligns with Gad’s historical character: a tribe of fierce warriors, “like a lion’s whelp” (Deuteronomy 33:20), who settled the eastern frontier of Canaan. The martial, pioneering quality of Aries resonates with Gad’s role as a border guard and his reputation for swift, decisive action.
Historical context
The Tribe of Gad, along with Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh, claimed territory east of the Jordan River—the fertile plains of Gilead and the hill country of Bashan (Numbers 32). This land, conquered from the Amorite kings Sihon and Og, was granted to Gad because of their large herds and their willingness to fight alongside the other tribes in the conquest of Canaan. The Gadites were renowned as “mighty men of valor, men trained for battle” (1 Chronicles 12:8), and their leader Jephthah became a judge of Israel. The tribe’s emblem is traditionally a tent or a troop of soldiers, echoing the name “troop.” In later Jewish tradition, Gad is associated with the zodiac sign Aries, reinforcing the martial and pioneering themes. The tribe’s history is marked by both military success and eventual assimilation into the northern kingdom of Israel, disappearing from record after the Assyrian exile in 722 BCE.
In Liber 777
At Path 15, the table of Liber 777 lists Gad as the corresponding tribe in the row of the Twelve Tribes. This placement links the tribe’s fortune and martial spirit to the path of Heh, the Emperor, and the astrological force of Aries—a synthesis of biblical tradition and Qabalistic symbolism.
