H

The Hebrew letter H (Heh, ה) is the fifth letter of the alphabet, meaning "window" or "breath." It is the sound of the aspirate, the exhalation of the spirit, and the open aperture through which light and life enter the world. In the Hebrew alphabet, H is the letter of revelation, the divine breath that shapes the universe, and the feminine principle of the Great Mother, Binah. Its numeric value is 5, the number of the pentagram, the five senses, and the five books of the Torah.

Position on the Tree of Life

H is assigned to Path 15, the 15th path of the Tree of Life, which connects the sephiroth Chokmah (Wisdom) and Binah (Understanding). This path is the "Intelligence of Unity" or the "Stable Intelligence," representing the bridge between the active, outpouring force of Chokmah and the receptive, formative power of Binah. It is the path of the letter H, the window through which the divine light descends into the form of creation.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the Hermetic Qabalah, H corresponds to the zodiacal sign Aries, the Ram, the first sign of the zodiac, ruled by Mars. Aries is the cardinal fire sign, representing initiation, courage, and the impulse of new beginnings. The letter H thus embodies the fiery, assertive, and pioneering energy of Aries, the force that breaks through barriers and establishes new cycles. This correspondence links H to the Tarot trump The Emperor, the card of authority, structure, and the establishment of order through will.

Historical context

The letter H has a rich history in the Western esoteric tradition. In the Hebrew alphabet, it is one of the five letters that can take a final form (Heh at the end of a word is written as ה, but its sound remains the same). In the Sefer Yetzirah, the Book of Formation, H is one of the twelve simple letters, each corresponding to a zodiacal sign, a month, and a direction. H is assigned to the month of Nisan (the month of Passover and the spring equinox), the direction of the south, and the sense of sight.

In the Golden Dawn tradition, the letter H is central to the formula of the Tetragrammaton (YHVH), where it appears twice: first as the second letter (Heh) representing the Mother, Binah, and the element of Water; and second as the final Heh, representing the Daughter, Malkuth, and the element of Earth. This dual role underscores H's function as a threshold—both the receptive womb of creation and the manifest result of that creation.

In the Kabbalistic system of gematria, the value 5 of H is associated with the five worlds of the Kabbalah, the five parts of the soul (Nefesh, Ruach, Neshamah, Chayah, Yechidah), and the five fingers of the hand. The letter H is also the initial of the divine name HaShem ("The Name"), used to refer to God in Jewish tradition.

In Liber 777

In Aleister Crowley's Liber 777, the letter H appears at step 15 of the English equivalent column (Col. LI), corresponding to the 15th path of the Tree of Life. Its value is given as the English letter H, representing the Hebrew Heh. This placement aligns with the path's astrological and Tarot correspondences, making H a key glyph in the system of correspondences that links the Hebrew alphabet, the zodiac, and the Tree of Life.
