Zebulon
Zebulon is the sixth son of Jacob and Leah, and the eponymous ancestor of the Tribe of Zebulon in the Hebrew Bible. The name is traditionally derived from the Hebrew root z-b-l, meaning 'to dwell' or 'to honor,' with Leah's exclamation at his birth: 'Now my husband will dwell with me' (Genesis 30:20).
Position on the Tree of Life
Zebulon is assigned to Path 26, the twenty-sixth path of the Tree of Life. This path connects the Sephirah Netzach (Victory) to Yesod (Foundation), a route associated with the formative, imaginative, and emotional energies that bridge the astral and the vital. In this context, Zebulon represents the tribal current that channels commercial and maritime enterprise into the stability of the community.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In the system of Liber 777, Zebulon corresponds to the astrological sign of Pisces. This association aligns with the biblical blessing of Jacob: 'Zebulon shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for an haven of ships' (Genesis 49:13). Pisces, the mutable water sign, governs the oceans, dreams, and the dissolution of boundaries—apt for a tribe whose inheritance was the coastline and whose livelihood came from the sea.
Historical context
Zebulon appears in the Torah primarily as the progenitor of one of the twelve tribes. The tribe's territory, as described in the Book of Joshua (19:10–16), lay in the northern part of Canaan, stretching from the Mediterranean coast to the Sea of Galilee. This strategic location made Zebulon a hub for trade and maritime commerce, a detail echoed in the Blessing of Moses (Deuteronomy 33:18–19): 'Rejoice, Zebulon, in thy going out... for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas.'
In later Jewish tradition, Zebulon is often paired with Issachar in a symbiotic relationship: Zebulon engaged in seafaring trade to support Issachar's scholars of Torah. This partnership became a model for the mutual support of material and spiritual pursuits. The tribe is also mentioned in the Song of Deborah (Judges 5:18) as one that 'jeoparded their lives unto the death' in battle, indicating a martial valor alongside their commercial identity.
In the context of Liber 777, Zebulon is listed among the Twelve Tribes on the path of the Moon (Path 26), reflecting the lunar, watery, and receptive qualities of Pisces. The tribe's association with the sea and trade resonates with the path's function as a conduit for the subconscious and the fluid dynamics of life.
Closing paragraph
In Liber 777, at scale step 26 (Path 26), Zebulon appears as the tribal correspondence for the path of the Moon, under the category of the Twelve Tribes. This placement emphasizes the tribe's maritime, lunar, and Piscean nature, serving as a symbolic anchor for the watery, receptive, and commercial currents that flow between Netzach and Yesod.
