Title of Tarot Trumps · Path 32
The Great One of the Night of Time.
The Great One of the Night of Time is the title assigned to the thirty‑second and final Path of the Tree of Life, corresponding to the Hebrew letter Tau (ת) and the zodiacal‑planetary power of Saturn. In the schema of Liber 777, this name designates the ultimate gateway — the point where the processes of creation, manifestation, and dissolution converge into the stillness of absolute being. The phrase itself evokes the primordial, undifferentiated darkness that precedes and envelopes all cycles of time: a vast, patient presence that is both the source and the terminus of every measured moment.
Position on the Tree of Life
This Path occupies the thirty‑second step (scale step 32), the last of the 32 Paths of Wisdom. It connects Malkuth (the Kingdom, the material world) to Yesod (the Foundation, the astral sphere). As the lowest of the paths, it carries the full weight of all the preceding 31 paths, acting as the channel through which the divine current finally crystallises into dense physical existence. In the Tarot, it is attributed to the Trump The Universe (or The World in some decks), which depicts the completion of the Great Work.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
Saturn — the outermost planet known to the ancients — rules this Path. Saturn represents limitation, structure, contraction, and the slow grinding of time. The “Night of Time” in the title refers directly to Saturn’s sphere, the boundary of the solar system (in traditional cosmology), where light dims and motion slows almost to a halt. Here the Great One is the silent witness that endures beyond all change, the “Lord of Karma” who measures out the seasons of existence and dissolves every form back into its root.
Historical Context
Egyptian and Greek Precedents
The title “Great One of the Night of Time” is a nineteenth‑century occult rendering of a much older concept. In Egyptian hieroglyphs, the god Ptah is sometimes called the “Great One who came into being in the primeval night,” the craftsman who shaped the world from the dark waters of Nun. The Greek counterpart is Chronos (not to be confused with Kronos), the personification of time as a serpent‑like, endless being. The Hermetic philosophers of Alexandria fused these figures into a single deity: the Aeon or Ageless Time that contains all cycles within itself.
Gnostic and Hermetic Traditions
In the Gnostic Apocryphon of John, the “Great One of the Night of Time” resonates with the description of the Invisible Spirit — the uncaused Cause that dwells in a light inaccessible, yet is paradoxically the darkness that engenders all light. Hermetic texts such as the Asclepius speak of a “Lord of Eternity” who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, the one who remains unchanged while the cosmos revolves around him.
The Golden Dawn and Crowley
The specific Title “The Great One of the Night of Time” appears in the Order of the Golden Dawn’s rank structure as a name for the thirty‑second Path. In the Liber 777 tables, Aleister Crowley preserved this designation exactly, pairing it with the Tarot Trump The Universe and the Hebrew letter Tau. Crowley’s commentary on the Path emphasises its role as the consummation of all previous stages: “The Universe is the synthesis of all forces; it is the Great One who endures through the Night of Time.”
Later Esoteric Use
Contemporary ceremonial magicians and Thelemites commonly invoke this title during rituals that seal a work or mark a point of completion. It appears in the Gnostic Mass (Crowley, Liber XV) in the line: “For I am the Great One of the Night of Time, and I am the Lord of the Universe.” Within the structure of the A∴A∴ system, the Path of Tau is the final grade of the Outer College; the aspirant who has integrated all thirty‑two paths becomes, symbolically, the Great One who stands outside of time.
In Liber 777 at This Step
At row CLXXX (Title of Tarot Trumps), column for Path 32, the table simply reads: “The Great One of the Night of Time.” It is the terminal point of the series that begins with the Spirit of Aiqhr (Path 11) and descends through all the intervening titles. The absence of any further correspondences in the “32 bis” row confirms that this is the final, irreducible title — the name of the ultimate mystery, given only to those who have traversed the whole Tree.

The Great One of the Night of Time remains the silent seal upon all that has been, is, and shall be. To name it is to acknowledge that every beginning arises from the same darkness and every end returns to it, and that the watcher in that darkness is none other than the self that has come to know itself as the whole.
