The Prophet of the Eternal, the Magus of the Voice of Power..

The Prophet of the Eternal, the Magus of the Voice of Power is the title of the Tarot Atu (Trump) assigned to the twentieth path of the Tree of Life, corresponding to the Hebrew letter Yod. This epithet encapsulates the dual nature of the card: the prophet who receives the eternal word and the magus who wields the power of that voice.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 20 runs between Chesed (Mercy) and Geburah (Severity), balancing compassion with judgment. The Hermit, as the Prophet, walks this path of solitude and inner illumination, mediating between the expansive love of Chesed and the restrictive force of Geburah. The letter Yod, meaning "hand," signifies the creative act that brings forth form from the divine will.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The Atu is attributed to the zodiac sign Virgo, the Virgin. Virgo represents purity, discernment, and the search for wisdom—qualities embodied by the Prophet who withdraws from the world to seek the eternal light. The planetary ruler of Virgo is Mercury, linking the card to the power of the voice and the transmission of knowledge.

Historical context

This title appears in Aleister Crowley's Liber 777 and is elaborated in The Book of Thoth. Crowley drew upon the Kabbalistic interpretation of Yod as the first letter of the Tetragrammaton, the seed of all creation. The "Prophet of the Eternal" echoes the figure of the Hermit as the guide who has attained the vision of the divine; the "Magus of the Voice of Power" relates to the power of the spoken word, the Logos. In earlier Tarot traditions, the card was simply "The Hermit," but Crowley's epithet emphasizes the active, prophetic role. The title also appears in the context of the A∴A∴ system, where the Hermit is a grade symbol representing the stage of solitary seeking. The Golden Dawn attributed the card to Yod and Virgo, and Crowley expanded this with the epithet to align with the Thelemic emphasis on the will and the creative utterance.

In Liber 777, this title appears in the column "Title of Tarot Trumps" for Path 20, alongside other such epithets for the remaining paths. It serves as a key to the card's deeper meaning within the Qabalistic schema, linking the practical work of the magus to the visionary role of the prophet.
