The Sword and the Serpent · Path 32

22-й путь Змея

The 22nd Path of the Serpent (22-y put Zmeya) is the culminating stage of the serpentine descent through the thirty-two paths of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. In the numbering system of the Western Esoteric Tradition, this is Path 32, the last of the twenty-two paths that connect the ten sephiroth. The name “Serpent” refers to the Ouroboros-like coil of the Lightning Flash—the creative energy that zigzags from Kether down to Malkuth, and the “22nd” marks its final turn before grounding in the physical world.

Position on the Tree of Life

This path occupies scale step 32, the lowest of the twenty-two paths. It links Yesod (the Foundation, sephirah 9) to Malkuth (the Kingdom, sephirah 10). As the final connector, it is the gateway through which all astral and formative energies pass to become manifest in the material realm. In the traditional arrangement, it is the last path traversed by the descending serpent and the first encountered by the ascending initiate.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the standard Hermetic Qabalah, Path 32 is assigned the Hebrew letter Tau (ת), whose numerical value is 400. Tau corresponds to the planet Saturn (Shabbathai) and the element of Earth in its most dense aspect. Saturn’s qualities of limitation, structure, and time align with the path’s role as the final filter before pure physical existence. The 22nd Path of the Serpent thus carries the weight of crystallisation and the boundary between the formless and the formed.

Historical context

The concept of the “Paths of the Serpent” originates in the medieval Kabbalistic text Sefer Yetzirah, which describes the thirty-two paths of wisdom: ten sephiroth and twenty-two letters. The serpent imagery was later amplified by Renaissance occultists such as Johannes Reuchlin and, in the modern era, by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. In Liber 777, Aleister Crowley systematised these correspondences, giving each path a distinct title. The 22nd Path of the Serpent appears in the column “The Sword and the Serpent,” a pairing that contrasts the active, dividing force of the Sword (the Lightning Flash through the sephiroth) with the coiled, unifying movement of the Serpent (the paths themselves). The 22nd path is the last of the serpent’s coils, where the Sword’s flash has already struck the ground and the serpent completes its circuit, ready to rise again.

In the table of Liber 777 at this step, the cell contains the title “22-y put Zmeya” under the row “The Sword and the Serpent.” It stands as the final entry in a sequence that began with the first flash of lightning at Kether and ends with the serpent’s tail touching the earth—a symbol of completion, containment, and the promise of renewal.
