The Sword and the Serpent · Path 20

10-й путь Змея

The Tenth Path of the Serpent (10-y put Zmeya) is the culminating stage of the Serpent's journey through the thirty-two paths of the Tree of Life. In the system of correspondences, the Serpent represents the descending current of divine wisdom, winding from Kether through the sephiroth and paths to manifest in Malkuth. This tenth path is the final descent, where the lightning flash of creation becomes fully grounded in the material world. The name derives from the Hebrew nachash (serpent), symbolizing the coiled wisdom that descends to animate the physical realm.

Position on the Tree of Life

This path occupies the twentieth step on the Tree of Life, linking the ninth path (Yesod) to the tenth sephirah (Malkuth). As the last of the Serpent's paths, it completes the sequence of twenty-two paths that connect the sephiroth. The Tenth Path is the threshold where the formless energies of the upper sephiroth crystallize into the dense reality of Malkuth, the Kingdom.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

In the Liber 777 system, the Tenth Path of the Serpent corresponds to the element of Earth, the final element in the tetragrammaton. This association reflects the path's role in solidifying the spiritual into the physical. The planetary correspondence is Saturn, the slowest and most material of the traditional planets, governing boundaries, structure, and the limitations of form. Together, Earth and Saturn emphasize the path's function as the terminus of the creative flow.

Historical Context

The concept of the Serpent's path originates in Kabbalistic tradition, where the Tree of Life is traversed by two primary currents: the Lightning Flash (descending from Kether to Malkuth) and the Serpent (ascending from Malkuth to Kether). The Tenth Path of the Serpent is the inverse of the first flash of lightning, representing the return journey of the soul from matter to spirit. In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, this path was associated with the formula of the Serpent and the Sword, where the Sword represents the active, penetrating force of the Lightning Flash, and the Serpent the passive, winding current of wisdom. The Tenth Path is the point where the Serpent's coils tighten around the material world, binding the spiritual to the physical.

In the table of Liber 777, the Tenth Path of the Serpent appears at scale step 20, within the row "The Sword and the Serpent." This placement underscores the path's role as the final stage of the Serpent's descent, where the Sword's cutting force and the Serpent's winding wisdom converge to create the manifest universe. The path is the completion of the alchemical process, the fixity of the volatile, and the embodiment of the divine in the mundane.
