Ecclesia Xsti, the Virgin Mary

The Virgin Mary, here named Ecclesia Xsti (the Church of Christ), is the feminine principle of divine embodiment and the vessel through which the ineffable Word descends into matter. As Theotokos (God-bearer) and the New Eve, she represents the purest receptivity, the passive aspect of the Godhead that transforms light into flesh. Her name itself derives from the Hebrew Miryam, often interpreted as 'bitter sea' or 'beloved,' but in this context she is the celestial sea of Binah, the great mother into which all forms dissolve and from which all forms are born.

Position on the Tree of Life

She occupies the tenth sphere, Malkuth (the Kingdom), within the Christian selection of the thirty-second path system. This positions her as the material conclusion of a descending grace: the outermost manifestation of the divine feminine that began in the supernal triad (Keter, Chokmah, Binah) in column forms. In the broader schema, Keter holds the Godhead in threefold unity, Chokmah is the paternal directive (God the Father, God who guides Parliament), and Binah corresponds directly to the Virgin Mary in her full cosmic aspect. Here at Malkuth, she appears in her ecclesiastical incarnation—the Church made visible, the earthly body of Christ. This pairing aligns her with the number 10, completion, and the material world.

Historical context

The title 'Ecclesia Xsti' reflects a deep theological tradition that identifies the Virgin Mary with the Church itself. This symbolic equation has roots in patristic writings (e.g., Saint Ambrose, Saint Augustine) and developed through medieval exegesis: as Mary bore Christ physically, so the Church bears him sacramentally. The Revelation of Saint John depicts the Woman Clothed with the Sun (Revelation 12) as both Mary and the Church—a dual imagery that later magical and mysterious Christian currents, including those catalogued in 777, formalized into a single correspondence. In the moralizing frame of the table, she is the Bride of the Song of Songs and the sealed fountain, a vessel untouched by corruption. The step 10 assignment underlines her role as foundation and gateway: she is the one who opens the door to divine incarnation and, mystically, the door itself. The patriarchal and matriarchal lines converge in her; she is the Stem of Jesse flowering as the Christ.

Ecclesia Xsti, the Virgin Mary, appears in Liber 777 at step 10 of the Christian Gods selection, where the Kingdom of the Godhead is made manifest in her maternal, ecclesiastical form. She is the end point of a descending chain of divinity, and the beginning point for any soul seeking to ascend the Tree.

Interactive hints

  • Hint

The title 'Ecclesia Xsti' translates directly from Latin as 'Church of Christ', conflating the Virgin with the body of believers.

  • Hint

Malkuth (Kingdom) is the tenth sphere, the physical world; assigning Mary here identifies her with the tangible, sacramental Church.

  • Hint

Mary as the New Eve reverses the fall; the Church as the New Eve continues her redemptive work.
