Smyrna

Smyrna (modern İzmir, Turkey) was one of the seven churches of Asia addressed in the Book of Revelation. The name derives from Greek smýrna (myrrh), a fragrant resin used in anointing and embalming, symbolizing suffering, death, and resurrection.

Position on the Tree of Life

In Liber 777, Smyrna is assigned to Path 30 on the Tree of Life. Path 30 is traditionally associated with the Hebrew letter Resh and the Sun, representing the self, vitality, and the divine son—a fitting correspondence for a church commended for its endurance through persecution.

Historical context

The church in Smyrna is the recipient of the second of the seven letters in Revelation 2:8–11. Christ introduces himself as “the First and the Last, who was dead and came to life again.” The letter praises the congregation for its works, tribulation, and poverty (though it is rich), and warns of impending imprisonment and testing. Unlike most of the other churches, Smyrna receives no rebuke. Historically, Smyrna was a wealthy, culturally Greek city with a strong imperial cult; Christians there faced severe persecution, including the martyrdom of Polycarp (c. 155 CE). The myrrh symbolism connects directly to Christ’s passion and the idea of a “sweet-smelling sacrifice.” In early Christian tradition, myrrh was also one of the gifts of the Magi, prefiguring the crucifixion.

In the Qabalistic framework of Liber 777, Smyrna’s placement on the solar path (Resh) reinforces the theme of sacrifice leading to glorification. The Sun path governs the individual will and the radiant self; the church of Smyrna, though poor and afflicted, is called “rich” in faith—a solar inversion of worldly values.

In Liber 777

Smyrna appears as the correspondence for Path 30 in the column of the Seven Churches of Asia, linking the Christian symbol of the persecuted, faithful church to the solar path of self-sacrifice and resurrection.
