Laodicea
Laodicea was an ancient city in Phrygia (modern-day Turkey), founded by Antiochus II Theos in the 3rd century BCE and named after his wife, Laodice. It became a wealthy commercial and banking center, renowned for its textile industry (especially black wool) and its medical school, which produced an eye salve. The city was also a significant early Christian center, one of the Seven Churches of Asia addressed in the Book of Revelation (Revelation 3:14-22).
Position on the Tree of Life
In the schema of Liber 777, Laodicea is placed on Path 13, which connects Kether (Crown) to Tiphereth (Beauty) on the Tree of Life. This path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Gimel (ג), meaning "camel," and is associated with the Moon. The Moon's reflective, passive, and transformative qualities resonate with the church's message of spiritual awakening and the need to move from a state of complacency to active faith.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
The astrological correspondence for Path 13 is the Moon, which governs cycles, emotions, and the subconscious. The Moon's influence here suggests that the lesson of Laodicea involves confronting inner darkness, purifying desire, and seeking true spiritual illumination rather than relying on external wealth or status.
Historical Context
The letter to Laodicea in Revelation is one of the most pointed critiques in the New Testament. The church is condemned for being "lukewarm"—neither hot nor cold—and is warned that it will be "spewed out" of Christ's mouth. The city's material prosperity is contrasted with its spiritual poverty: "You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked" (Revelation 3:17). The text advises buying "gold refined in the fire" (true faith), "white clothes" (righteousness), and "salve to put on your eyes" (spiritual sight).
Historically, Laodicea was destroyed by an earthquake in 60 CE but rebuilt without imperial aid, reflecting its self-sufficiency. The city's water supply, which arrived via aqueduct from hot springs, often arrived lukewarm—a physical metaphor for the church's spiritual state. The church likely faded after the Islamic conquests, but its legacy endures as a symbol of spiritual indifference.
In Liber 777, Laodicea appears on Path 13 within the column "Selection of Christian Gods (10); Apostles (12); Evangelists (4) and Churches of Asia (7)." Its placement here underscores the path's role as a bridge between the divine source (Kether) and the heart of the Tree (Tiphereth), challenging the seeker to transcend material complacency and achieve genuine spiritual warmth.
