The Paths of the Sepher Yetzirah · Path 13

Uniting I.

Uniting I. — the Intelligence of the union of contraries — is the intellectual force attributed to the 13th Path of the Sepher Yetzirah. The term derives from the Latin unire, ‘to join into one,’ and embodies the active synthesis of the Primordial Elements (Fire, Water, Air, Earth) into a coherent whole.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 13 connects Kether (Crown) — the dimensionless point of pure being — to Tiphareth (Beauty), the central harmonising sphere of the Microprosopus. As the first descending Path from the Supernal Triangle into the ethical centre of the Middle Pillar, the Uniting I. mediates between the ineffable and the formal, drawing the light of the Abyss into the heart of manifestation.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

This Path, named Gimel in Hebrew, is symbolised by the Moon — not as a physical orb, but as the reflection, receptivity, and rhythmic modulation of supernal Will. The lunar correspondence underscores the translucent membrane through which the Uniting Intelligence pours: it is the glass that both receives and transmits, the membrane that separates yet joins.

Historical context

The Sepher Yetzirah, the earliest extant Hebrew text of systematic Qabalah, assigns to each of the 32 Paths a specific ‘Intelligence’ (Sekhel). In the standard Western Qabalistic tradition transmitted via Knorr von Rosenroth’s Kabbala Denudata and later systematised by MacGregor Mathers and Aleister Crowley, the 13th Intelligence is described as ‘the Uniting Intelligence, or the Intelligence of the Union of Contraries.’ This phrase appears in the Yetziratic schema reproduced in the Kabbala Denudata (1677–1684) and is the direct source for the entry in Crowley’s Liber 777.

The ‘union of contraries’ refers to the reconciliation of the four elements in the astral sphere: the Microprosopus, here Tiphareth, receives the sheer unconditioned light of Kether and, through the agency of this Intelligence, weaves it into the balanced harmony of the Lesser Countenance. Medieval and Renaissance Qabalists, such as the anonymous author of the Porta Coelorum and Athanasius Kircher in Oedipus Aegyptiacus, identify this Path as the ‘Mirror of the Universe’ — the zone where all opposites meet without conflict.

In the 777 system, the Uniting I. is linked to the Tarot trump The High Priestess, whose veiled figure holds the scroll of the secret Law, further reinforcing the lunar, receptive, and mediating character of this Path.

In Liber 777

At step 13 of Column XIII (The Paths of the Sepher Yetzirah), table row 13, the cell reads simply ‘Uniting I.’ — the exact title handed down from the Kabbala Denudata and the Porta Coelorum. It stands as a technical designation of the 13th Sekhel, and is the direct correspondential value used for Pathworking, ritual synthesis, and the reconciliation of elemental oppositions.
