Haniel

Haniel (חַנִּיאֵל, meaning "Grace of God" or "Joy of God") is an archangel whose name evokes divine favor, beauty, and the harmonious rhythm of the celestial spheres. She is often depicted as a feminine or androgynous figure, embodying the receptive, magnetic, and aesthetic qualities of the divine.

Position on the Tree of Life

Haniel presides over the seventh Sephirah, Netzach (Victory or Endurance), which sits on the Pillar of Mercy. Netzach is the sphere of emotion, love, art, and the instinctual drives that seek union with the divine. As the archangel of this Sephirah, Haniel channels the raw, creative energy of the lower astral plane into structured beauty and passionate devotion.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Haniel is the archangelic ruler of Venus (Nogah), the planet of love, beauty, art, and sensual pleasure. This correspondence aligns her with the goddesses Ishtar, Aphrodite, and Venus, and with the metal copper. Her influence governs the harmonious blending of opposites, the magnetic attraction between souls, and the ecstatic joy found in both physical and spiritual love.

Historical context

Haniel first appears in the Enochian literature of the Second Temple period (3rd–1st centuries BCE), particularly in the Book of Enoch (1 Enoch 20:8), where she is listed among the seven holy angels who watch. In this text, she is described as one who "presides over the spirits of the children of men," a role that emphasizes her connection to human emotion and the divine grace that guides it.

In later Kabbalistic tradition, Haniel becomes firmly associated with Netzach. The Zohar describes her as the angel who leads the souls of the righteous into the Garden of Eden, and she is often invoked in rituals for love, beauty, and artistic inspiration. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn systematized this correspondence, placing Haniel as the archangel of the seventh Sephirah, with the divine name YHVH Tzabaoth (Lord of Hosts) and the planetary intelligence of Venus.

In Christian angelology, Haniel is sometimes counted among the seven archangels, though she is not named in canonical scripture. She appears in the De Coelesti Hierarchia of Pseudo-Dionysius and in later medieval grimoires, where she is invoked for protection, love magic, and the attainment of grace. Her name is also linked to the Hebrew root ḥ-n-n (to show favor), which connects her to the divine attribute of mercy (Chesed) as it flows downward through the Tree of Life.

Haniel in Liber 777

In Crowley's Liber 777, Haniel appears as the archangel of Netzach (scale step 7) in the column "Archangels of Assiah" (the material world). She is the Venusian counterpart to the other archangels of the sephiroth: Metatron (Keter), Ratziel (Chokmah), Tzaphkiel (Binah), Tzadkiel (Chesed), Kamael (Geburah), Raphael (Tiphereth), Mikael (Hod), Gabriel (Yesod), and Sandalphon (Malkuth). Her placement here grounds the abstract beauty of Netzach into the tangible realm of ritual, art, and the physical expression of love.
