Tzaphkiel
Tzaphkiel (צפקיאל) is the Archangel of Binah, the third Sephirah on the Tree of Life. The name is often translated as "Contemplation of God" or "Beholder of God," deriving from the Hebrew roots tzafah (to look out, to behold) and El (God). This title reflects the angel's primary function: to embody the divine, receptive, and contemplative understanding that is the essence of Binah.
Position on the Tree of Life
Tzaphkiel presides over Binah, the third Sephirah, which represents Understanding, form, and the receptive, feminine principle of the divine. As the Archangel of this sphere, Tzaphkiel is the active force that channels the raw, undifferentiated wisdom of Chokmah (the second Sephirah) into the structured, conceptual forms of Binah. In the Qabalistic scheme of the four worlds, Tzaphkiel is specifically the Archangel of Binah in the world of Assiah, the material plane, grounding this profound understanding into tangible reality.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Tzaphkiel is intimately linked with the planet Saturn (Shabbathai). This correspondence is not one of limitation or punishment, but of structure, time, depth, and the crystallization of form. The Saturnine nature of Tzaphkiel reflects the solemn, patient, and deeply contemplative energy of Binah, the great mother who gives birth to all form and, in time, receives all things back into herself.
Historical context
Tzaphkiel is a prominent figure in the angelological systems of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and later esoteric traditions, which synthesized Jewish angelology with Qabalistic cosmology. While not a canonical figure in the Hebrew Bible, Tzaphkiel appears in the Zohar and other mystical texts as a high-ranking angelic prince associated with the Sephirah Binah. In these sources, Tzaphkiel is often described as the chief of the order of the Erelim (the Valiant Ones), the angelic choir that corresponds to Binah. The name itself is a theophoric compound, a common pattern for archangels, indicating a direct relationship with the divine attribute of contemplation. The Golden Dawn system, as codified in Aleister Crowley's Liber 777, places Tzaphkiel firmly in this role, linking the angel to the 3rd path of the Tree of Life, the color black, and the Saturnine sphere.
In the table of Liber 777, Tzaphkiel appears as the Archangel of Assiah corresponding to the Sephirah Binah, the third step on the scale. This placement establishes Tzaphkiel as the active, angelic governor of the material manifestation of divine Understanding, a solemn and powerful force of cosmic structure and contemplative depth.
