Sandalphon (Metatron)
Sandalphon is the towering archangel of the sphere of Malkuth, the Kingdom, and is often paired with Metatron as his feminine or earthly counterpart. The name is derived from the Greek sandalos (sandal) or the Hebrew sandalfon, meaning “co-helper” or “brother,” reflecting his role as a bridge between the divine and the material world. In Kabbalistic tradition, Sandalphon is said to stand on the threshold of the physical universe, gathering the prayers of humanity and weaving them into a crown for the Creator.
Position on the Tree of Life
Sandalphon presides over the tenth sephirah, Malkuth, the final sphere that embodies the physical world and the culmination of the divine emanation. As the archangel of Assiah (the world of action), he governs the most dense and tangible level of existence, where spiritual forces manifest as matter. This position places him at the foot of the Tree, opposite the crown of Keter, and he is often depicted as a giant figure whose feet touch the earth while his head reaches the heavens.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Malkuth is associated with the planet Earth (in the sense of the material world) and the element of Earth. Sandalphon’s influence is thus tied to stability, fertility, and the physical body, grounding the higher energies of the sephiroth into practical reality. In astrological terms, this corresponds to the fixed earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) and the material conditions of life.
Historical context
Sandalphon emerges prominently in the Talmud and later Merkabah mysticism, where he is described as one of the supreme archangels, alongside Metatron. In the Babylonian Talmud (Chagigah 13b), he is said to stand behind the Divine Chariot, his height spanning a journey of five hundred years. He is also identified in the Zohar and other Kabbalistic texts as the angel who binds the worlds together, receiving the prayers of Israel and transmitting them to the higher spheres. In the medieval Berit Menuhah, Sandalphon is linked to the sephirah Malkuth and the divine name Adonai Melekh, emphasizing his role as the king’s herald in the material realm. Unlike Metatron, who is associated with the upper sephirah Keter and the World of Emanation, Sandalphon’s domain is the lowest world, Assiah, where he acts as a guardian of the physical creation and a guide for souls incarnating into matter.
In the table of Liber 777, Sandalphon appears at the tenth step of the scale, corresponding to the Archangels of Assiah. This placement aligns him with the number 10, the completion of the sephirothic system, and the material foundation upon which all spiritual work rests. His presence here underscores the essential role of the physical world as the vessel for divine manifestation, a key tenet of Hermetic Qabalah.
