Top Point

Top Point (Heb. Qadmon, “Primordial Point”; also Nekudah Rishonah) is the first geometric act in the Kabbalistic diagram—the dimensionless point that represents the inception of emanation. In the standard layout of the Paths of the Yetziratic Alphabet, the Top Point occupies the highest vertex of the hexagonal star that forms the Tree, aligned with the sephirah Kether (the Crown) and the head of the Middle Pillar.

Position on the Tree of Life

The Top Point is fixed at Path 32, the final path of the Yetziratic system and the last of the 32 Paths of Wisdom. Path 32 (the letter Tau) runs from Malkuth to Yesod, a mundane and receptive conduit, yet its own topmost location—the apex of the diagram—corresponds to the supernal sphere of Kether. In the microcosmic body, the Top Point is the crown of the head, the seat of pure consciousness before it descends into duality.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the Qabbalistic system of the Golden Dawn, the Top Point is assigned the zodiacal sign Saturn because Kether is considered the “depth of beginning” and the first limitation of the infinite light. Saturn here represents the elemental barrier between the Ain Soph (Limitless) and the first sephirah. The Top Point is also said to “shine with the black brilliance” of Saturn’s sphere, a paradoxical luminosity of absolute concentration.

Historical context

The concept of the Primordial Point appears in the Sefer Yetzirah (2:1): “Twenty-two foundation letters: He engraved them, carved them, weighed them, changed them, combined them, and formed from them the whole creation and everything that would be created in the future.” The Top Point is the beginning of that engraved act—the first movement from nothingness into existence. In the Zohar (I, 15a), the Primordial Point is described as “the concealed point which is the innermost point of the whole house, and it is the thought in which all the other points are hidden.”

In later Kabbalistic diagrams (notably those of Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria), the Top Point is identified with Keter Elyon (the Supernal Crown) and is often represented as a white dot within a black circle, symbolizing the hidden light before the first contraction (Tzimtzum). The Golden Dawn’s 777 tables solidify this by placing the Top Point at the 32nd Path under Saturn, aligning it with all other Kether correspondences: the Primum Mobile, the archangel Metatron, and the divine name Eheieh.

In Liber 777

In table row LXXXIII (the “Bar” column) at scale step 32, the Top Point appears as the final item in a series of spatial points on the Tree. It is the first and highest spatial coordinate, paired with the letter Tau and the Path 32, which connects the lowest sphere (Malkuth) to the foundation (Yesod) but whose apex remains at the Crown.
