Numerical Value of Col. CLXXV. · Path 17
7
Seven is the number of completion, of the sacred week, and of the classical planets known to antiquity. In Hebrew, the number is written with the letter Zayin (ז), whose name means "sword" or "weapon," and whose numeric value is 7. This dual symbolism—of a finished cycle and of a cutting instrument—permeates its esoteric character.
Position on the Tree of Life
Seven corresponds to Path 17, the seventeenth path of the Tree of Life. This path connects Binah (Understanding) to Tiphareth (Beauty), a route that descends from the supernal abyss into the heart of the microcosm. It is the path of the letter Zayin, which is attributed to the astrological sign Gemini.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Astrologically, 7 is the number of Gemini, the Twins. This sign is ruled by Mercury, the messenger planet, and embodies duality, communication, and the interplay of opposites. The number 7 thus carries the energy of active intellect, of joining and separating, and of the sword that divides truth from falsehood.
Historical context
The number 7 has been sacred across cultures for millennia. The seven days of creation in Genesis, the seven planets of the ancients (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn), and the seven classical metals all stem from the same root. In the Hebrew tradition, the Sabbath is the seventh day, and the Menorah holds seven lamps. The Pythagoreans called 7 the "Vehicle of Life" because it contains both the ternary (3) and the quaternary (4), spirit and matter. In the Sepher Yetzirah, Zayin is one of the seven double letters, those that have both a hard and a soft pronunciation, reflecting the dual nature of the number. In the Tarot, the seventh trump is The Chariot, a card of victory through will, often drawn as a conqueror in a chariot pulled by two sphinxes or horses—again, the theme of controlled duality.
In the table of Liber 777, at row CLXXVI, column Numerical Value of Col. CLXXV, the number 7 appears as the value for Path 17. This places it in a sequence where the numerical values of the paths ascend from 1 (Path 11) through 10 (Path 20), then jump to 20, 30, and so on. The 7 here is not merely a count but a specific glyph, encoding the entire tradition of the number within the Qabalistic framework of the Tree of Life.
