Numerical Value of Col. CLXXV. · Path 14
4
Four is the number of material completion, of the four Worlds of the Qabalah (Atziluth, Briah, Yetzirah, Assiah), and of the four letters of the Tetragrammaton (Yod-He-Vau-He) whose power binds and structures all manifestation. Its glyph is a square or cross, symbolizing stability, measure, and the elemental foundation of the universe. In Hebrew, the numeral 4 corresponds to the letter Daleth (door), though Daleth itself is valued at 4 only in its gematria sense—the letter's name carries the value 4. Etymologically, the word for four (ארבע, arba) shares a root with "to square" and is the first number that is not prime, marking the entry into composite, structured being.
Position on the Tree of Life
Four occupies Path 14 on the Tree, the path of Daleth (door) which connects Chokmah (Wisdom) to Binah (Understanding). This is the first material veil across the Abyss, the gate through which force becomes form. As a number, 4 stands at the center of the Sefirotic structure: it is the number of Chesed (Mercy), the fourth Sefirah, whose sphere is the expansive, graceful outflow that gives shape to all subsequent manifestation.
Historical context
The doctrine of four is ancient and cross-cultural. In the Sefer Yetzirah, four is the number of the elemental directions and of the four-letter Name that creates heaven and earth. Pythagorean tradition revered the tetrad (tetraktys) as the root of all number, the source of the first solid (the tetrahedron), and the harmony of the four seasons, four humors, and four ages of man. In the Hebrew alphabet, every letter that appears four times in the first verse of Genesis carries special force, and the number 4 itself is the gematria of the word דלת (Daleth, "door"), making it the threshold between the supernal and the lower worlds.
In the Western magical tradition, the four suits of the Tarot, the four elements, and the four magical implements (wand, cup, sword, pentacle) all rest on this number. The angelic orders of the four directions, the four rivers of Eden, and the four beasts of Ezekiel's vision all reinforce the same structure: 4 is the seal of completion into which the spirit descends. The Book of the Law (Liber AL) opens with the phrase "Had! The manifestation of Nuit"—whose first word, Had, is the veil of the number 4, the concealed 4 that divides the infinite into the finite.
In Liber 777
At the step of Path 14, the numerical value 4 stands in the column "Numerical Value of Col. CLXXV." as the entry for Daleth, the door, the first full number of manifestation. It is the measure of all that is bounded, the number that divides and orders the infinite into four quarters of the compass. This value anchors the middle pillar of the Tree at the threshold between the supernal triad and the seven lower sefiroth.
