Numerical Value of Col. CLXXV. · Path 13
3
The number three is, symbolically, the child of the union of one and two. It is the first numeral of true synthesis—a line emerging from a point and moving to a second point, then returning to its origin to manifest a triangle. In the decimal system, three is the number of harmony, of the triad, and of the resolution of duality through a third term. The word for 'three' in Hebrew is Shalosh (שלוש), whose root connotes peace, perfection, and the completion of a cycle.
Position on the Tree of Life
Within the schema of the 32 Paths of Wisdom, the number 3 corresponds to the third Sephirah, Binah (Understanding), which marks the uppermost vertex of the Pillar of Severity. Here, on Path 13, the numeral 3 serves as the numerical value assigned to that particular step in the diagram, linking the abstract concept of threehood to the sphere of Saturn and the Great Mother.
Historical context
The symbolism of three is perhaps the most universal of all numbers. In Egyptian mythology, the triad of Osiris, Isis, and Horus reenacts the drama of death and resurrection. The Greeks venerated the triple Hecate, the three Fates, the three Graces, and the three divisions of the soul. In Hinduism, the Trimurti—Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva—govern creation, preservation, and destruction. The Christian Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) is the most prominent Western theological expression of this number.
The Pythagorean tradition held three to be the perfect number because it has a beginning, middle, and end. The Tripartite Nature of Man (spirit, soul, body) is another echo of this principle. Within the Hermetic Qabalah, three is the number of Binah, the third Sephirah, which represents the passive, receptive, and understanding aspect of God, as opposed to the active wisdom of Chokmah. From Binah flows the formless abyss, and its planet is Saturn, the slowest and most distant planet in the ancient system, associated with limitation, time, and sorrow.
In the alchemical corpus, the number three is tirelessly repeated: the three principles (Sulphur, Mercury, Salt), the three stages (nigredo, albedo, rubedo), and the three primes of the Philosophers. The triangle is also the symbol of the element of Fire, the first of the elements to be ignited in the Great Work.
The numeral 3 in Liber 777
At this step on Path 13, the value '3' is set as a numeric key. In Liber 777, this path connects the Sephirah of Chokmah (Wisdom) to Binah (Understanding), bridging the active and passive poles of the supernal triangle. The correspondences clustering around this numeral are rich: the Hebrew letter attached is Lamed, the ox-goad, and the magical formula is that of 'The Goddess' in her triform aspect, while the talisman should bear a realistic portrait, evoking the fixed, understanding nature of Saturn's sphere.
