Numerical Value of Col. CLXXV. · Path 19
9
The number 9 is the numerical value assigned to the 19th path of the Tree of Life, corresponding to the Hebrew letter Teth (ט). In Qabalistic numerology, it represents the completion of a cycle, the hidden strength of the serpent, and the foundational sphere of Yesod.
Position on the Tree of Life
The number 9 is the value of Path 19, which connects the Sephiroth Hod (8) and Netzach (7) on the Tree of Life. Simultaneously, 9 is the number of the Sephirah Yesod (the Foundation), the ninth emanation that acts as a receiver and transmitter of the divine influx. This dual placement—as a path number and a Sephirah number—gives the digit 9 a pivotal role in the structure of the Tree, bridging the lower and upper worlds.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Through its identity with the letter Teth, the number 9 is linked to the zodiac sign Leo (the Lion) and, by extension, to the Sun as Leo’s ruling planet. In the symbolism of the Sepher Yetzirah, Teth means “serpent” or “womb,” implying a coiled, latent power that gives birth to forms. As the number of Yesod, 9 also carries lunar and reflective qualities, for Yesod is the sphere of the Moon and the astral plane. Thus 9 embodies both the solar fire of Leo and the lunar receptivity of the foundation.
Historical context
The number 9 appears in the earliest strata of Jewish mysticism. In the Sepher Yetzirah, the 32 paths of wisdom include the 9th path (the “Pure Intelligence”) and the 9th letter Teth, whose numerical value is 9. The text describes Teth as the “serpent” that coils around the Tree, a symbol of the primal creative energy. Later Hermetic Qabalists, such as those in the Golden Dawn, systematized these correspondences: the 9th Sephirah Yesod is the “receiver of the emanations” and the foundation of the astral body, while the 9th path (Teth) is the path of the “hidden strength” that sustains the universe. In Pythagorean tradition, the ennead (9) is the first square of an odd number (3×3) and the number of the horizon, marking the limit of the single-digit series. The number 9 is also the value of the word “emet” (truth) in Hebrew gematria when spelled in full (א־מ־ת = 1+40+400 = 441, but reduced to 9 by digital root), reinforcing its association with completion and divine order.
In Liber 777, the number 9 appears as the numerical value for Path 19, aligning the digit with the letter Teth, the Sephirah Yesod, and the astrological sign Leo. This single cell encapsulates a web of correspondences that have been used for centuries in Qabalistic meditation and ritual.
