Residence
Residence (from Latin residentia, “dwelling place”) denotes the abode of the divine power of Geburah, the Sephirah of severity and judgment. In the Qabalistic scheme of the Hekhalot—the celestial palaces of Merkabah mysticism—this is the fifth palace, a fortress of divine justice where the stern aspect of the Godhead is enthroned.
Position on the Tree of Life
Residence corresponds to the fifth Sephirah, Geburah, which sits on the Pillar of Severity. It is the sphere of strength, discipline, and the restraining force that balances the expansive energy of Chesed. As the “Residence” of this attribute, the palace is conceived as a place of rigorous order, where the fires of judgment are contained and directed.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Geburah is ruled by Mars, the planet of war, aggression, and purification through conflict. The Residence thus partakes of Martian qualities: it is a fortified stronghold, a citadel of divine wrath that burns away impurity. In astrological terms, the palace’s nature aligns with the harsh but necessary corrections of Mars in its exaltation (Capricorn) or fall (Cancer), depending on the tradition.
Historical context
The term “Residence” in this column derives from the English translation of the Hekhalot literature, particularly the Hekhalot Rabbati and related texts. These describe a series of seven palaces (hekhalot) that the mystic must traverse to reach the Merkabah (divine chariot). The fifth palace is often called Heikhal ha-Din (“Palace of Judgment”) or Heikhal ha-Pachad (“Palace of Fear”). In the Zohar, Geburah’s palace is associated with the “Tree of Death” and the left side of the sephirotic tree. Medieval Qabalists like Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria elaborated on these palaces as stages of divine emanation and mystical ascent. The English rendering “Residence” emphasizes the palace as a permanent dwelling of a specific divine force—here, the stern power of Geburah—rather than a transient station. This contrasts with the “Plain” of the higher sephiroth (where form is minimal) and the “Emplacement” of Chesed (a site of foundation), marking a shift toward a more defined, enclosed structure.
In Liber 777, at step 5 (Geburah), the Residence is the palace corresponding to the divine attribute of strength—a place of rigorous order, fiery angels, and the throne of judgment. It stands as the abode where severity is both housed and wielded.
