These describe a series of seven palaces (hekhalot) that the mystic must traverse to reach the Merkabah (divine chariot). The fifth palace is often called Heikhal ha-Din (“Palace of Judgment”) or Heikhal ha-Pachad (“Palace of Fear”). In the Zohar, Geburah’s palace is associated with the “Tree of Death” and the left side of the sephirotic tree. Medieval Qabalists like Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria elaborated on these palaces as stages of divine emanation and mystical ascent. The English rendering “Residence” emphasizes the palace as a permanent dwelling of a specific divine force—here, the stern power of Geburah—rather than a transient station. This contrasts with the “Plain” of the higher sephiroth (where form is minimal) and the “Emplacement” of Chesed (a site of foundation), marking a shift toward a more defined, enclosed structure.
