Emplacement
Emplacement is a term of art in the Qabalistic geography of Liber 777, denoting a fixed, established position or station for a spiritual force. The word derives from the French emplacement, meaning 'a site' or 'a location,' and in this context it carries the sense of a deliberate, stable positioning—a place where something is set or placed with authority.
Position on the Tree of Life
Emplacement corresponds to the fourth Sephirah, Chesed (Mercy), on the scale of the Tree of Life. Chesed is the sphere of expansive, structuring force, the first of the seven lower Sephiroth to receive the outflow from the supernal triad. As a 'Palace' (Heikhal) in the Qabalistic system, Emplacement represents the fixed abode of that force—a place where the fluid energy of the higher spheres is given a stable, architectural form. This contrasts with the more abstract 'Plain' of Keter, Chokmah, and Binah, or the more transient 'Residence' of Geburah.
Historical context
The concept of Emplacement arises from the Qabalistic tradition of the Heikhalot (Palaces), a mystical literature that describes the visionary ascent through heavenly halls or chambers. In the Zoharic and later Lurianic Kabbalah, these palaces are not merely physical locations but states of being and levels of divine manifestation. The term 'Emplacement' specifically appears in the synthetic tables of Aleister Crowley's Liber 777, where it is used to translate and systematize these traditional correspondences into a coherent, graded scale. In this system, each Sephirah on the Tree of Life is assigned a 'Palace' name that describes its function as a dwelling or station for a particular divine aspect. For Chesed, the fourth Sephirah, the Palace is 'Emplacement'—a term that captures the idea of a fixed, authoritative seat of mercy and expansion, where the divine will is established in a stable form.
In the table of Liber 777, Emplacement appears at step 4 (Chesed) in the column of 'English of Palaces' (Column XCIII). It is the fixed, authoritative station of the divine force at this level, a place where the expansive mercy of Chesed is given a permanent and structured abode.
