Veil of the vault of heaven
The Veil of the Vault of Heaven is the outermost barrier of the material universe, the boundary between the manifest world of Assiah and the divine realms beyond. In Qabalistic cosmology, it is the final veil that separates the unmanifest from the created order, often depicted as the starry firmament that encloses the physical cosmos. The term derives from the Hebrew "פָּרֹכֶת" (Paroketh), the veil of the Tabernacle, and the "רקיע" (Raki'a), the firmament of Genesis. It is the threshold of the unknowable, the edge of the phenomenal world.
Position on the Tree of Life
This veil corresponds to the tenth Sephirah, Malkuth (the Kingdom), on the Tree of Life. It is the culmination of the descent of divine energy into matter, the point where the infinite becomes finite. In the scale of 1=10, it is the material world itself, the densest expression of the divine.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Astrologically, the Veil of the Vault of Heaven is associated with the sphere of the fixed stars, the outermost visible boundary of the cosmos. In traditional astrology, this is the Primum Mobile or the sphere of the zodiac, the final limit of planetary influence before the empyrean. It corresponds to the element of Earth in its most material aspect, and to the planet Saturn in its role as the boundary of time and space.
Historical context
The concept of the Veil of the Vault of Heaven appears in various mystical traditions. In the Hebrew Bible, the firmament (Raki'a) is described as a solid dome separating the waters above from the waters below (Genesis 1:6-8). In the Zohar, this firmament is the veil that conceals the divine light, through which the Sephiroth manifest. In the Hermetic Qabalah of the Renaissance, particularly in the works of John Dee and later in the Golden Dawn, the Veil of the Vault of Heaven is the outermost of the four Qabalistic worlds, Assiah, the world of action. It is the final barrier before the Abyss, the threshold of the unmanifest. In Liber 777, this veil is listed under the Palace of Malkuth, the Palace of the Bride, the Shekinah, as the outermost garment of the divine.
In the table of Liber 777, the Veil of the Vault of Heaven appears at step 10 (Malkuth) in the column "English of Palaces" (Column XCIII). It is the final entry in the series of palaces, representing the material universe as the outermost veil of the divine presence.
