Faithful I.

Faithful I.

Faithful I. is the thirty-second of the Thirty-Two Paths of Wisdom, the twenty-second Path of the Sepher Yetzirah (Path 22). In the Kabbalistic scheme, each Intelligence (Hebrew: Sekhel) is a mode of consciousness through which the Divine flows into the Sefirot; “Faithful” here denotes unwavering adherence to the axial principle of equilibrium, the balance that sustains Creation.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 22 runs from Chesed (4, Mercy) to Geburah (5, Severity) on the Pillar of Mildness. It is the first horizontal path below the Abyss, directly bridging the two pillars of force and form. Its Hebrew letter is Lamed (ל), meaning ox-goad, an instrument of direction and discipline. On the Tree, this path is the “Faithful” channel that transmits the unwavering covenant of the middle column, ensuring Justice and measure within the Sefirotic structure.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

Libra (♎) rules Path 22, bringing the cardinal Air sign’s qualities of balance, judgment, and harmony. Libra’s glyph is the Scales, an instrument of exact weighing; the Faithful I. thus embodies the perfect equilibrium between Mercy and Severity, without which Justice could not act. In astrological Kabbalah, Libra’s tempering influence prevents the severity of Geburah from destroying and the mercy of Chesed from dispersing—a faithful mediation.

Historical Context

The Sepher Yetzirah (Book of Formation), 2nd–6th century CE, describes the Thirty-Two Paths as ten Sefirot and twenty-two letters, each a “path of wisdom.” By the 13th century, Kabbalists such as the Bahir and Abraham Abulafia assigned to each path a specific Intelligence. The title “Faithful I.” first appears in the Latin translations of the Sepher Yetzirah used by Johann Reuchlin (16th century) and later codified in Knorr von Rosenroth’s Kabbala Denudata (1677–84).

MacGregor Mathers transmitted this title into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (1888–1903), where it became “Faithful Intelligence.” Aleister Crowley, in Liber 777 (1909), gave it column 13 (The Paths of the Sepher Yetzirah) at step 22. He retained the Latin Intelligentia Fidelis, linking it to the Tarot Trump Justice (Atu VIII), whose Hebrew letter Lamed and astrological sign Libra form the page’s spine. The “faithfulness” is the cosmic law that nothing is lost; every action is weighed and returned.

In the later Sepher Yetzirah commentary by Rabbi Isaac Luria (16th century), this Path is described as the “Faithful Covenant,” the channel through which the Shekinah descends to judge the world with mercy. The Christian Kabbalists saw it as the fides (faith) that justifies, balancing the left and right hands of God.

In the Table of 777

In Liber 777, column XIII row 22 lists the subject as Faithful I., the Intelligence of the twenty-second Path. Its sibling cells across the table correspond to: Tarot Trump VIII (Justice), scales, the number 22, the zodiac sign Libra, the planet Saturn (in Libra’s exaltation), and the astrological dignity of the equal balance. The entry reflects the teaching that this Sekhel is the faithful witness of the Divine equilibrium, which neither leans nor falls.
