Sagen

Sagen is the name of an angelic being associated with the second (Succedent) decan of the zodiac sign Sagittarius. The name likely derives from the Hebrew root סגן (sagan), meaning ‘deputy’ or ‘prefect’, reflecting a governing role over a specific celestial division.

Position on the Tree of Life

Sagen is assigned to Path 25, the path of Samekh, which connects Netzach (Victory, sphere of Venus) to Yesod (Foundation, sphere of the Moon). This path corresponds to the Hebrew letter Samekh, symbolizing support and the spiral of spiritual ascent. As a decan angel on this path, Sagen mediates the influence of Sagittarius within the subtle anatomy of the Tree.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Sagen rules the second decan of Sagittarius (10°–20° Sagittarius). In traditional decanate astrology, this segment is sub-ruled by Mars, giving the angel a character of directed energy, ambition, and the drive to expand through disciplined action. The primary planetary ruler of Sagittarius, Jupiter, also colours Sagen’s nature with beneficence and philosophical reach.

Historical context

The names of the decan angels, including Sagen, appear in the Renaissance grimoire tradition, particularly in works such as Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy (Book II, chapter 37) and the Ars Paulina (the second part of the Lemegeton). These sources systematized the 36 decans of the zodiac, each governed by an angelic intelligence. Sagen is listed among the Succedent (second) decans, a classification derived from the Hellenistic astrological division of each sign into three ten-degree periods: Ascendant, Succedent, and Cadent. The name Sagen may be a Latinized form of an earlier Hebrew or Arabic angelonym; variants such as Sagiel or Saguen appear in some manuscripts. Crowley incorporated Sagen into Liber 777 as part of his comprehensive table of correspondences, drawing on these older sources to align the decan angels with the 32 Paths of the Tree of Life.

In Liber 777

In the table, Sagen occupies the cell at the intersection of Path 25 (Samekh) and Column CXVIII, which lists the angels of the Succedent decans. It is one of a series of such names—including Lencher, Virvaso, and Verasua—that together map the 36 decans onto the 32 paths, with some paths sharing multiple decan angels. Sagen thus serves as a specific spiritual intelligence invoked in operations requiring the focused energy of the Sagittarian second decan.
