Virvaso

Virvaso is a spirit name recorded in the Qabalistic correspondences of Liber 777, assigned to Path 16 (the path of Vav, corresponding to Taurus). The name likely derives from a Goetic source, possibly a variant of Vassago or a distinct entity, though its exact etymology remains obscure; the root vir- may suggest a connection to the Latin vir (“man”) or vis (“force”), but no definitive translation exists in the grimoire tradition.

Position on the Tree of Life

Virvaso occupies Path 16 on the Tree of Life, the path of the Hebrew letter Vav. This path connects Chokmah (Wisdom, the second sephirah) to Chesed (Mercy, the fourth sephirah). As a channel between the supernal outpouring of wisdom and the structured benevolence of mercy, Virvaso embodies the formative, stabilizing force that translates pure insight into ordered compassion. The path is also associated with the Tarot trump the Hierophant, symbolizing tradition, teaching, and the transmission of sacred law.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Path 16 is governed by the zodiac sign Taurus, an earth sign ruled by Venus. This astrological attribution infuses Virvaso with qualities of steadfastness, material endurance, sensuality, and a patient, grounded nature. The Venusian rulership adds an undercurrent of harmony, beauty, and desire, tempered by the fixed, earthy stability of Taurus. In practical terms, Virvaso’s influence is one of slow, deliberate manifestation—building structures that endure through time.

Historical context

The name Virvaso appears in the “Succendent” column of Liber 777, a table of correspondences compiled by Aleister Crowley and S. L. MacGregor Mathers from a variety of Western esoteric sources. The term “Succendent” (from Latin succedere, “to follow”) likely refers to a class of spirits that serve as successors or attendants to higher angelic or demonic orders, a classification found in grimoires such as the Lemegeton (particularly the Ars Theurgia Goetia) and the Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. In the Abramelin system, the 22 paths of the Tree of Life are each assigned a “Serving Spirit” or “Familiar,” and the list of such spirits includes names that closely resemble those in the Liber 777 Succendent column. For Path 16, some manuscripts give “Vassago” or “Vasago,” a well-known Goetic prince who appears in the Goetia as the third spirit, ruling over twenty-six legions and possessing knowledge of past and future events. Virvaso may be a variant spelling or a distinct entity from a different recension of the same tradition. The other Succendent spirits for adjacent paths—Lencher (Path 15), Verasua (Path 17), Syth (Path 18), Sitlacer (Path 19), Thoptius (Path 20), Aterechinis (Path 22), Tepiseuth (Path 24), Sagen (Path 25), Epima (Path 26), Astiro (Path 28), and Thopibui (Path 29)—form a coherent set of names that appear in no other widely published list, suggesting they derive from a specific manuscript or oral tradition that Crowley incorporated into his schema.

In Liber 777, Virvaso is the entry at row CLXX, column CXVIII (Succendent), serving as the specific spirit of Path 16 under the classification of Succendent angels or demons. Its presence there anchors the path’s correspondences, providing a named entity for meditation, invocation, or symbolic reference within the Qabalistic framework.
