The Sword and the Serpent · Path 16

6-й путь Змея

The 6th Path of the Serpent (6-y put Zmeya) is the sixteenth path on the Tree of Life, a stage in the descending spiral of the Lightning Flash and the ascending coil of the Serpent of Wisdom. Its name derives from the Hebrew letter Vav (ו), meaning 'nail' or 'hook,' symbolizing connection and the linking of the divine masculine (Chokmah) with the divine feminine (Binah) in the supernal triangle. This path is the sixth in the sequence of the Serpent's journey, representing the integration of the five previous flashes into a coherent, dynamic force.

Position on the Tree of Life

This path connects Geburah (Severity, the 5th Sephirah) to Chesed (Mercy, the 4th Sephirah). It is the first path on the Pillar of Severity, descending from the sphere of judgment toward the sphere of grace. The 6th Path of the Serpent thus embodies the alchemical tension between restriction and expansion, discipline and compassion, and the transmutation of raw power into structured wisdom.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

In the Hermetic Qabalah, this path is attributed to the zodiac sign of Aries (♈), the Ram. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, ruled by Mars, and represents initiation, courage, and the primal impulse of will. This correspondence reinforces the path's martial and creative energy, aligning with the Sword of Geburah and the Serpent's fiery, transformative nature.

Historical Context

The concept of the 'Paths of the Serpent' originates in the medieval Kabbalistic text Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation), which describes the 32 paths of wisdom: the 10 sephiroth and the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The Serpent (Nachash) is a symbol of the divine energy that coils through these paths, awakening consciousness. In the 16th century, the Safed kabbalists, particularly Isaac Luria, elaborated on the 'Lightning Flash' (the descending emanation) and the 'Serpent's Path' (the ascending return). The 6th Path of the Serpent is thus part of the Lurianic framework of tzimtzum (contraction) and tikkun (restoration), where the serpentine ascent represents the soul's journey back to the divine source.

In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, this path was further systematized in the 1880s by S.L. MacGregor Mathers and others, who assigned it to the Tarot card of The Emperor (Atu IV), the Hebrew letter Vav, and the astrological sign Aries. The Emperor card depicts a ruler seated on a throne, holding a scepter and an orb, symbolizing authority, structure, and the materialization of will. The 6th Path of the Serpent thus becomes the channel through which the divine will (Kether) manifests as earthly dominion (Malkuth).

In Liber 777

In Aleister Crowley's Liber 777, the 6th Path of the Serpent appears at scale step 16 (Path 16) under the row 'The Sword and the Serpent.' This row unites the martial symbol of the Sword (Geburah's weapon) with the serpentine energy of the path, emphasizing the alchemical marriage of fire and water, judgment and mercy. The correspondences in this cell include the Hebrew letter Vav, the zodiac sign Aries, the Tarot trump The Emperor, and the number 6, all of which converge to describe a path of dynamic equilibrium and creative power.
