Alchemical Tree of Life (i.) · Tiphereth
♂
♂ is the classical astrological symbol for Mars, the red planet, and in alchemical contexts represents iron, the metal of war, and the principle of Sulfur—the active, fiery, and masculine essence of nature. The symbol itself is a stylized shield and spear, derived from the god of war's arms. Its etymology traces to the Latin Mars, the god of military might, and in Greek, Ares.
Position on the Tree of Life
♂ occupies the sixth sephirah, Tiphereth, on the Alchemical Tree of Life. This placement is paradoxical: Tiphereth is the sphere of beauty, harmony, and the solar consciousness, yet here it receives the martial, corrosive influence of Mars. In alchemy, this signifies the necessary dissolution of the ego (the fixed sun) by the sharp, penetrating force of the Philosophical Sulfur to achieve a higher, balanced synthesis.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Astrologically, ♂ governs assertion, conflict, energy, and desire. Its nature is hot, dry, and choleric. In the alchemical schema of the seven planets, Mars is the lower octave of the Sun, representing raw, unrefined will. Its metal is iron, which rusts and consumes, mirroring the alchemical process of corrosio (corrosion) that strips away impurities.
Historical context
The symbol ♂ appears in medieval and Renaissance alchemical manuscripts as a direct borrowing from astrology. The Tabula Smaragdina (Emerald Tablet) tradition, while not naming Mars, implies its role as the "father of all perfection" in its corrosive aspect. Paracelsus (1493–1541) identified Mars with the Ens of iron, a vital principle that could be extracted and used medicinally. In the Rosarium Philosophorum (1550), the Mars-Sulfur conjunction is depicted as the "Red King" who must be slain and resurrected. Later, in the Atalanta Fugiens (1617) of Michael Maier, the Mars symbol appears in emblems showing the alchemist as a warrior, wielding the sword of philosophical fire to cut the bonds of matter. The association with Tiphereth on this specific table likely derives from the alchemical axiom that the Sun (Tiphereth) must be "fixed" by the Sulfur of Mars to become the Philosopher's Stone.
In Liber 777, ♂ appears at this step as the alchemical symbol for the Sulfur principle, the active, fiery, and masculine component of the Tria Prima, placed at Tiphereth to indicate the stage where the alchemist must apply the corrosive, martial force of the Philosophical Sulfur to the solar sphere of beauty and harmony, effecting the necessary nigredo or dissolution.
