Alchemical Tree of Life (i.) · Netzach

The Alchemical Jupiter (♃) is the alchemical metal tin, a soft, silvery-white metal associated with expansion, benevolence, and the preservation of vitality. Its symbol, a crescent atop a cross, derives from the astronomical glyph for the planet Jupiter, itself the sigil of the god-king of Olympus. In the alchemical lexicon, ♃ is the Regulus or Jovial metal, the third of the seven classical metals, linked to the divine breath of life and the principle of growth.

Position on the Tree of Life

♃ occupies step 7 on this scale, corresponding to Netzach (Victory or Endurance) on the Qabalistic Tree of Life. Netzach is the sphere of Venus, desire, and nature’s driving force. The placement of Jupiter—a planet of magnanimity and justice—in Netzach reflects the alchemical concept of “fixed” or “digested” tin: a metal that, when purified, embodies the harmonious expansion of the life force. Here, ♃ is the Lapis Lazuli of metals, a stable, noble substance that resists corrosion, symbolizing the victory of regeneration over decay.

Historical context

Classical alchemy inherited the Jupiter-tin correspondence from Babylonian and Hellenistic astrology, where the planetary metal was associated with the king’s authority and the divine right to rule. In the Emerald Tablet, the “Father of all things” is often glossed as the Jovial principle—the expansive, creative fire that permeates the universe. The Zosimos of Panopolis (c. 300 CE) described tin as the “white copper” that, when treated with sulfur and mercury, yields the Elixir of Life. Medieval European alchemists, following the Turba Philosophorum, ranked ♃ as a “perfect” metal, second only to gold and electrum, capable of imparting longevity and resisting the decay of lesser metals. The Renaissance physician and alchemist Paracelsus recommended Jovial preparations (e.g., tinctura Jovis) for ailments of the liver and spleen, understanding Jupiter as the planet of vital heat and sanguine temperament. In the Dee-Kelly Enochian system, Jupiter’s angelic order is the Hashmalim, and the metal tin serves as the material correspondences for their sigils.

Alchemical role in Liber 777

In this specific table (CXII, Alchemical Tree of Life, step 7), ♃ directly corresponds to the Alchemical Jupiter itself—the purified metallic tin, the Jovis corpus that the adept must “fix” and “multiply” to prepare the Philosophical Stone. Its sibling cells at this step include the planetary Jupiter and the astrological sign Sagittarius (ruled by Jupiter), but the subject here is the metal, the tangible substance that embodies the celestial virtue. The cell value is simply the glyph ♃, the unadorned symbol of the metal, standing for the entire operative tradition of Jovial alchemy. The context of Netzach reinforces that this is not tin as a common ore, but the spiritualized metal—the body of Jupiter rendered incorruptible through the Great Work.
