Alchemical Tree of Life (i.) · Hod
♀
The alchemical symbol ♀, the mirror of Venus, is the sigil of the Copper of the Philosophers. It is the fixed, feminine, and aqueous principle of the Work, the metallic seed of the red stone, and the vessel of generation. Its glyph combines the circle of spirit with the cross of matter, signifying the soul's descent into form and its subsequent purification.
Position on the Tree of Life
On the Alchemical Tree of Life, ♀ is assigned to the eighth Sephirah, Hod (Splendor). Hod is the sphere of intellect, communication, and the formative powers of the mind. Here, Venus is not the raw, generative force of Netzach (Victory), but the refined, intellectualized, and structured aspect of love and beauty. It represents the alchemical solve (dissolution) that precedes coagula, the breaking down of fixed forms into their essential salts for recombination.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Astrologically, ♀ rules Libra and Taurus. In alchemy, this translates to the balancing of opposites (Libra) and the earthy, generative stability (Taurus) required for the Work. It is the Luna of the metals, the white tincture, and the key to the Coniunctio—the sacred marriage of the King (Sulfur) and Queen (Mercury).
Historical context
The association of copper with Venus is ancient, rooted in the metal's use for mirrors and its connection to the goddess's Cypriot cult. In the Emerald Tablet, the principle of "as above, so below" is enacted through the Venusian force of attraction and repulsion. Paracelsus linked Venus to the Ens of the heart, the vital spirit that animates the blood. The Rosarium Philosophorum depicts the Coniunctio as the union of the Red King (Sol) and the White Queen (Luna), the latter being the Venusian principle. The symbol ♀ itself, a stylized hand mirror, was standardized in the 16th century by alchemists like Michael Maier, who in his Atalanta Fugiens used it to represent the Anima Mundi—the soul of the world that must be extracted from the base metal.
In the context of Liber 777, ♀ at the step of Hod represents the intellectualized, formative aspect of the Venusian principle. It is the Copper of the Philosophers, the white tincture, and the Solve that dissolves the fixed into the volatile, preparing the matter for the final Coagula of the Stone.
