Purple
Purple is a secondary color born of the union of red and blue, a hue that has long symbolized the synthesis of opposites: the earthly and the divine, the active and the passive, the material and the spiritual. Its name derives from the Latin purpura, itself from the Greek porphyra, referring to the Tyrian purple dye extracted from the murex snail—a substance so rare and labor-intensive that it became the exclusive color of emperors and high priests.
Position on the Tree of Life
On the Tree of Life, Purple in the Queen Scale of Colour corresponds to the sphere of Yesod (9) and to Path 12. Yesod, the Foundation, is the lunar sphere of dreams, illusion, and the astral plane. Path 12, attributed to the Hebrew letter Beth and the astrological element of Air, connects Kether (the Crown) to Binah (Understanding). This path is the first of the “intelligence of the house of influence,” a channel through which the pure potential of Kether descends into form. The purple of this path thus represents the alchemical marriage of the divine will (Kether) with the receptive wisdom (Binah), a color of the threshold where spirit begins to clothe itself in substance.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In the Queen Scale, the color Purple at Path 12 is not directly tied to a planet but to the element of Air and the zodiacal sign of Mercury (as Beth is the letter of Mercury). This attribution underscores the intellectual and communicative nature of this path—the Magus (or Fool) who bridges the infinite and the finite. Purple here is the color of the magician’s robe, the veil between worlds, and the transmutation of raw energy into articulate power.
Historical context
The use of purple in magical and religious contexts predates the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn by millennia. In ancient Egypt, purple was associated with the goddess Isis and the mysteries of the underworld. In the Hebrew tradition, the tekhelet (a blue-violet dye) was used for the tassels of prayer shawls and the garments of the High Priest, signifying a direct link to the divine. The Roman emperors wore purple as a symbol of their semi-divine status, a tradition continued by the Byzantine court. In alchemy, purple was the color of the lapis philosophorum—the Philosopher’s Stone—the goal of the Great Work, representing the union of the fixed (sulfur, red) and the volatile (mercury, white).
The Golden Dawn’s Queen Scale, derived from the Sepher Yetzirah and the works of Eliphas Levi, assigned specific colors to each sephirah and path to encode the energetic qualities of the Tree. Purple at Path 12 is the “color of the veil of the sanctuary,” a hue that both conceals and reveals. It is the color of the tzitzit (fringes) and the urim and thummim—the oracular stones of the High Priest. In the rituals of the Golden Dawn, purple was used in the grade of the Practicus (4°=7□) and in the furniture of the Temple of the Middle Pillar, where it represented the balance of mercy and severity.
In Liber 777
In Crowley’s Liber 777, the Queen Scale of Colour at Path 12 is given as “Purple.” This entry sits within a complex web of correspondences that include the Hebrew letter Beth, the zodiacal sign of Mercury, the number 12, and the magical image of the Magus. The color Purple here is not merely a visual attribute but a key to the path’s function: the transformation of the unconscious (Yesod) into the conscious (Kether) through the power of the Word. It is the color of the magician’s robe, the ink of the sacred book, and the twilight hour when the worlds of spirit and matter meet.
