Onycha
Onycha is a fragrant substance, traditionally identified as the operculum (nail-like shell) of certain marine mollusks or, less commonly, as a plant resin. Its name derives from the Greek ὄνυξ (onyx, “nail” or “claw”), reflecting its physical form. In the Hebrew Bible, it appears as one of the four ingredients of the holy incense (Exodus 30:34), where it is called שחלת (sheḥeleth).
Position on the Tree of Life
In Liber 777, Onycha is assigned to Path 18, the 18th path of the Tree of Life. This path corresponds to the Hebrew letter Teth and the zodiac sign Taurus. It connects the sephiroth Chesed (4) and Geburah (5), bridging the energies of mercy and severity.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Path 18 is ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and harmony, and is associated with the fixed earth sign Taurus. Onycha’s placement here links its scent—rich, warm, and slightly animalic—to the sensual, stabilizing qualities of Venus‑Taurus.
Historical context
Onycha is best known from the biblical recipe for the holy incense (Exodus 30:34), where it is commanded to be mixed with stacte, galbanum, and frankincense. The exact botanical or zoological identity has been debated for centuries. The Jewish historian Josephus and the Talmud describe it as a product of the Red Sea, likely the operculum of the Strombus or other mollusks. When burned, the shell releases a musky, balsamic odor. Classical authors such as Pliny the Elder mention onycha as an ingredient in perfumes and medicines. In medieval and Renaissance alchemy, it was sometimes conflated with labdanum or other resins. The substance appears again in the Hebrew mystical tradition, where it is listed among the perfumes of the Tabernacle. In the 777 system, Onycha also appears on Path 23 (paired with Myrrh), but its primary assignment to Path 18 emphasizes its connection to the fixed, earthy, and Venusian currents of the Tree of Life.
In the Perfumes column of Liber 777, Onycha is the designated scent for Path 18, corresponding to the letter Teth and the zodiac sign Taurus, under the rulership of Venus.
