Musk, Civet (also saturnian Perfumes)

Musk, Civet (also saturnian Perfumes) refers to two distinct animal-derived scents paired as a single category on this scale step, linked by their dense, penetrating, and deeply carnal character. True musk is a secretion from the gland of the male musk deer (Moschus moschiferus), while civet is a paste produced by the perineal glands of the civet cat (Viverra civetta). Both have been used for millennia as fixatives and base notes in perfumery, prized for their tenacious, warm, and somewhat faecal undertones that, when diluted, blossom into an almost unbearably sweet, erotic richness. The deliberate inclusion of ‘saturnian Perfumes’ in the same entry signals that these essences belong to the sphere of Saturn: heavy, binding, earthy, and tinged with the melancholy of matter’s deepest denseness.

Position on the Tree of Life

This entry occupies Path 26, the twenty-sixth path of the Yetziratic system, which connects the Sephirah Binah (Understanding) to Gevurah (Severity). Binah is the great Mother, the dark, form-giving waters of creation; Gevurah is the red, martial force of judgment and restriction. The path thus passes through a region of severe, structuring limitation—a descent from the womb of form into the furnace of discipline. The perfumes assigned here—musk, civet, and the general category of saturnian scents—therefore represent the heaviest, most material, and most binding odours in the entire 777 schema, appropriate for work that seeks to ground, curse, bind, or contact the most inert and isolating powers.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

The corresponding planet is Saturn (Shabbathai). Saturn rules limitation, time, contraction, death, and the bones and structure of the body. In the planetary hierarchy, Saturn is the outermost visible sphere, the slowest and coldest, and in alchemical terms shares its signature with lead. The saturnian perfumes are thus not the volatile, uplifting scents of the spheres of Jupiter or Venus; they are thick, animalistic, and clinging—attuned to the deep subconscious, ancestral memory, and the inertia of the material world. In ritual practice, musk and civet are used to invoke the presence of chthonic entities, bind a working to the physical plane, or seal a pact with the heaviest forces of nature. They are the scent of the grave, the charnel house, and the locked treasury.

Historical context

Animal musks have been known since antiquity. The classical world imported musk from the East through the Silk Road; it is mentioned by Dioscorides and Pliny, though often confused with castoreum. In medieval Arabic and European alchemy, musk was considered a remedy against the plague and a symbol of the ‘quintessence’ due to its ability to intensify and preserve other scents. Civet, arriving from Africa and Asia, gained popularity in Renaissance European courts, where it was used to scent gloves and garments—sometimes to mask the smell of unwashed bodies, but also as a deliberate, provocative note. By the Victorian era, both musk and civet were staples of haute perfumery, though their natural sources have now been largely replaced by synthetic compounds.

In occult tradition, musk and civet are classified as ‘satanic’ or ‘infernal’ perfumes, reserved for works of binding, hexing, necromancy, and Saturnian invocations. Eliphas Lévi describes musk as an odour that attracts ‘astral influences of a low and violent kind’. The Greater Key of Solomon instructs that black fumigations—often including musk—are used for conjurations of the spirits of the dead. In the Golden Dawn system, which directly informs 777, these scents are assigned to the ‘Black’ or ‘Saturnian’ pillar and are never used in petitions for mercy, love, or wisdom, but only for works requiring severity, justice, or the creation of obstacles.

In the table of 777

At this step (Path 26), the cell lists Musk, Civet (also saturnian Perfumes) as a single, composite perfume category. This pairing is unique in the table: elsewhere musk appears alone under Chokmah (as a warm, expansive scent) and civet alone under Binah (as a bitter, contracting odour). Their union here on Path 26 fuses the seed of Chokmah’s creative force with the womb-tomb of Binah’s black wisdom, creating an essence of pure, binding materiality—the heaviest perfume in the entire 777 schema. The practising magician would burn this scent (or a synthetic analogue) only when the work demands absolute boundary, closure, or the summoning of forms that must be held fast until released by force.
