Olibanum

Olibanum, the resin of Boswellia trees, is one of the most ancient and universally revered aromatic substances. Its name, from the Arabic al-lubān ('the milk'), describes the milky sap that hardens into golden or amber tears. In the Western esoteric tradition, it is the quintessential solar and fire incense, embodying the principle of spiritual purification and the ascent of consciousness toward the divine.

Position on the Tree of Life

Olibanum is the perfume assigned to the sixth Sephirah, Tiphereth (Beauty), the central sphere on the Tree of Life. Tiphereth represents harmony, balance, and the solar principle—the radiant self that mediates between the higher and lower worlds. As the incense of this Sephirah, Olibanum is used to align the practitioner with the solar current, to invoke the inner Child, and to consecrate the center of the ritual space.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Olibanum is traditionally ruled by the Sun, the celestial body that governs Tiphereth. Its nature is fiery, solar, and expansive, making it appropriate for rituals of healing, illumination, and the integration of the personality with the Higher Self. In planetary magic, it is the primary incense for solar operations, including those seeking vitality, success, and spiritual clarity.

Historical context

The use of Olibanum in religious and magical practice predates recorded history. It was a central component of the sacred incense blend ketoret in the Temple of Jerusalem, as described in the Hebrew Bible (Exodus 30:34). The ancient Egyptians employed it in embalming, temple rites, and as an offering to the gods, often burning it in the morning as a solar devotion. The Greeks and Romans imported it from Arabia and used it in both public cult and private magic, where it was believed to drive away evil spirits and attract benevolent influences.

In the Hermetic and alchemical traditions, Olibanum was considered a symbol of the soul's purification and its return to the divine source. The medieval grimoires, such as the Key of Solomon, prescribe it for consecrating tools, purifying spaces, and invoking planetary spirits. Its association with the Sun made it indispensable for any operation requiring light, life, and spiritual authority.

In the 20th-century revival of ceremonial magic, particularly within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Olibanum was adopted as the standard incense for the grade of Tiphereth, representing the Adept who has achieved inner balance and vision of the Holy Guardian Angel.

In Liber 777

In Crowley's Liber 777, Olibanum appears as the perfume for Tiphereth (Scale step 6), and also for Paths 19, 30, and 31. On Path 19 (the letter Teth, associated with the zodiacal sign Leo), it is the incense of the Lion's fire. On Path 30 (Resh, the Sun), it is listed alongside Cinnamon as one of the 'all Glorious Odours.' On Path 31 (Shin, the element of Fire), it is named among the 'all Fiery Odours.' This triple attribution underscores its fundamental solar and fiery nature, making it a versatile and powerful tool in the magician's repertoire.
