Saffron, all Generous Odours

Saffron is the dried stigma of Crocus sativus, a purple autumn crocus. Its name derives from the Arabic za‘farān, meaning ‘yellow’. For millennia it has been the world’s most costly spice by weight, valued not only as a flavouring and dye but as a scent of the highest spiritual generosity. In the language of perfumery, saffron yields a deep, honeyed, almost metallic aroma—earthy yet radiant, an odour that gives without reserve.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Within the schema of Liber 777, Path 21 (which connects Tiphareh to Netzach) is attributed to the astrological sign Libra and the planetary decanate of Venus in Libra. Saffron’s generous, solar warmth tempered by Venusian sweetness mirrors this placement: it is a perfume of balanced giving, not crude excess but measured, conscious bounty.

Historical context

Saffron’s use in sacred and royal contexts is ancient. Minoan frescoes at Knossos (c. 1600 BCE) depict women gathering crocuses for ritual. In the Hebrew Bible, saffron (karkom) appears in the Song of Solomon (4:14) alongside myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon—a garden of precious perfumes. Greco-Roman physicians like Dioscorides prescribed it as a fumigant for pleasure and purification. Persian and Indian traditions employed saffron in temple offerings and wedding unguents, often blended with sandalwood or rose, to signify divine favour and material generosity.

In Western esoteric practice—particularly the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, from whose tables Liber 777 draws—saffron’s association with the 21st Path solidifies its role as a bridge between the solar centre (Tiphareh) and the sensory, emotional sphere of Netzach. It is a perfume that ‘gives’ because it sacrifices itself: the harvested stigma are infinitesimal, yet a few threads permeate an entire chamber.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 21 runs from Tiphareh (Beauty, the Solar centre) to Netzach (Victory, the sphere of Venus and natural emotion). Saffron, with its golden colour and expansive, warming scent, is the appropriate olfactory signature for this path of outgoing radiance.

How it appears in Liber 777

At row XLII.* (Perfumes), column corresponding to the current scale step—Path 21—the table entry reads simply: ‘Saffron, all Generous Odours’. This pairs saffron with the abstract category of generosity, implying that the perfumer should seek not only the specific spice but any odour that gives freely, richly, without stinginess: a broad class of which saffron is the supreme exemplar.
