Gedi

Gedi (גְּדִי) is the Hebrew term for the zodiac sign Capricorn, literally meaning “kid” or “young goat.” In the astrological and Qabalistic framework of Liber 777, Gedi represents the tenth sign of the zodiac, associated with the winter solstice, the element of Earth, and the planetary rulership of Saturn. Its symbol, the sea-goat, merges the earthly goat with the fish’s tail, signifying the ascent from material depths to spiritual heights—a key theme in the initiatic path.

Position on the Tree of Life

Gedi occupies Path 26 on the Tree of Life, which connects the sephiroth Hod (Splendor) and Netzach (Victory). This path is one of the three “Heavens of Assiah” that correspond to the zodiacal signs, and it is specifically the Heaven of Capricorn. In the 777 schema, Path 26 is the channel through which the influence of Capricorn descends into the material world (Assiah), shaping the practical, disciplined, and ambitious qualities associated with the sign.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

Astrologically, Gedi is Capricorn, a cardinal earth sign ruled by Saturn. Its glyph combines the horn and tail of the goat, reflecting the dual nature of the sea-goat: the goat climbing the mountain (ambition, structure) and the fish swimming in the deep (mysticism, the unconscious). In the Heavens of Assiah, this correspondence emphasizes the concrete manifestation of Saturnine discipline—time, limitation, and the crystallization of form. The planet Saturn (Shabbathai) is the ruler of Capricorn, and in the 777 table, Shabbathai appears at Binah (3), while Gedi at Path 26 shows the application of that Saturnine energy in the zodiacal cycle.

Historical Context

The name Gedi appears in the Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation), one of the foundational texts of Jewish mysticism, where the twelve simple letters are assigned to the twelve zodiacal signs. The letter Ayin (ע) is assigned to Capricorn, and the sign is called Gedi. In later Kabbalistic works, such as the Zohar, Gedi is linked to the tribe of Naphtali and the month of Tevet (December–January). The image of the goat also carries sacrificial and scapegoat symbolism in the Hebrew Bible, but in the Qabalistic tradition it is primarily a celestial sign marking the turning point of the year. In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which heavily influenced Crowley’s Liber 777, Gedi is the name used for Capricorn in the “Heavens of Assiah” column, aligning with the Hebrew astrological nomenclature.

In the table of Liber 777, Gedi appears as the Heaven of Assiah for Path 26, directly corresponding to the zodiac sign Capricorn. It is one of the twelve zodiacal Heavens, each a specific sphere of influence in the material universe, and its placement on this path underscores the transformative journey from the stability of Netzach to the intellectual clarity of Hod, mediated by the stern, formative energy of the sea-goat.
