26
The number 26 in the Key Scale of Liber 777 designates the 26th path on the Tree of Life. In Hebrew gematria, 26 is the numerical value of the Tetragrammaton (YHWH), the ineffable divine name, making it a number of unity, creation, and the direct emanation of Godhead. This numerical identity links the abstract scale to the most sacred name in Kabbalah.
Position on the Tree of Life
26 corresponds to the 26th path, one of the 22 paths that connect the ten sephiroth. As a Key Scale value, it serves as a coordinate for aligning correspondences across the entire system of Liber 777, from divine names to magical implements.
Historical context
The number 26 appears in the earliest layers of Jewish mysticism. The Sefer Yetzirah enumerates 32 paths of wisdom—10 sephiroth and 22 letters—but does not assign numbers to the paths; the numbering of paths 11–32 is a later development systematized in the medieval Kabbalistic tradition, notably in the Pardes Rimonim of Moses Cordovero and the Etz Chaim of Isaac Luria. By the time of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the 26th path was fixed as the path of the Hebrew letter Ayin (ע), whose numerical value is 70, not 26. The number 26 itself derives its Kabbalistic weight from the Tetragrammaton: Yod (10) + Heh (5) + Vav (6) + Heh (5) = 26. This equation is foundational in the Zohar and later Lurianic Kabbalah, where the name YHWH is understood as the blueprint of creation. The number 26 thus becomes a key to the structure of the sephiroth, especially in the doctrine of Tzimtzum and the partzufim. In Liber 777, Crowley and Mathers adopted the Key Scale as a universal indexing system, so that 26 appears not only as a path number but as a reference point for any table row that uses the scale—whether for gods, planets, or plants.
In the table of 777
At this step, the Key Scale column simply lists 26 as the numerical identifier for the 26th path. It is the coordinate used to cross-reference the same row across all other columns of the table, linking the path to its Hebrew letter, astrological sign, and myriad other correspondences without needing to repeat the full name.
