Dispersing Ravens

Dispersing Ravens are a class of daemonic entities within the Qliphotic shell Netzach, corresponding to the seventh Sephirah on the Tree of Life. The name evokes the raven as a bird of carrion, divination, and desolation, and the act of dispersing suggests scattering, fragmentation, and the breaking of form. In Hebrew, the underlying concept relates to the root ערב (Orev), meaning raven, which also puns with Erev (evening) and connections to the Qliphotic realm of mixed or mingled forces.

Position on the Tree of Life

Dispersing Ravens occupy the seventh position on the Qliphotic scale, corresponding to Netzach on the radiant Tree. Netzach is the sphere of Victory, endurance, and Venusian desire; its Qliphah is the unbalanced, egoistic force of lust and ravenous appetite, often called by the collective name of the Qliphoth of Netzach: the Ravens (Orev). The Dispersing aspect emphasises the scattering of conscious intention into chaotic, grasping impulses—a dark mirror of the harmonious dispersal of energy in Netzach’s positive face.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The underlying planetary energy is Venus (♀) in its corrupt and unregulated aspect: raw craving without beauty or proportion. Dispersing Ravens act under this Venusian current, serving to break up patterns of order and serenity, dispersing the mind’s focus into a flock of conflicting desires.

Historical context

The correspondences in Liber 777 draw upon the wider Qliphotic schema systematised in the Zohar and later developed by Kabbalists such as Isaac Luria and, in the nineteenth century, by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. In these texts, the Qliphoth are the “shells” or husks of impurity that correspond to each Sephirah. The seventh qliphotic realm is associated with the demonic order of the Ravens or the Crow-people. In the Zohar (e.g., Zohar II, 267b), ravens are images of deceit, but also of the mingled forces of judgment that seek to separate and isolate sparks of holiness. The term “Dispersing Ravens” in the 777 table amplifies this: the action is not merely of a static evil but of an active scattering of integrity, breaking up structures so that their fragments can be seized or lost. Later occultists, particularly Kenneth Grant, explored this current in relation to the left-hand path and the Tunnels of Set, where the raven forms guide initiates through disintegration.

In the corpus of Liber 777, “Dispersing Ravens” appears in column VIII (English of the demonic orders) at step 7. It is placed among a sequence of active, aggressive, or deceptive daemonic classes—from “Hinderers” to “Deceivers”—and sits directly between “Disputers” (Tiphereth) and “Deceivers” (Hod). This sequence charts a descent from conflict through the dissolution of coherent desire (dispersion) into outright falsehood.

In the schema of the table, Dispersing Ravens represent the third of the ten forms of the Qliphoth at this Sephirah, encompassing the energies of carrion birds that feed on spiritual death and scatter the remains of consciousness across the astral plane. Their function is to break down the fixed forms of the Sephirothic structure into mutable, decaying fragments.**

Role in Liber 777

In column VIII, line 7 of the 777 table, the English term “Dispersing Ravens” denotes the specific demonic order attributed to the seventh Sephirah on the Qliphotic Tree. Together with its Hebrew title (which, in the row, is given as Orev or similar) and its corresponding magical formula, it stands as a key for theaspirant to the Western Esoteric Tradition: a symbol of the scattered forces that must be gathered and integrated in the Great Work.
