The Evil Woman or (simply) The Woman

The Evil Woman (or simply The Woman) is a symbolic figure in Western esoteric tradition, particularly within the Qabalistic framework of Aleister Crowley's Liber 777. The term does not refer to a literal woman but to a metaphysical principle: the material world as a trap or veil that obscures the divine light. Rooted in Gnostic and Hermetic thought, the “Evil Woman” represents the seductive, illusory nature of physical existence—the qlippoth (shells) of the Qabalah that entrap the soul. The epithet “evil” here is not moral but functional: she is the final obstruction in the descent of spirit into matter, the thickest veil of unredeemed nature.

Position on the Tree of Life

The Evil Woman corresponds to Malkuth (the Kingdom), the tenth sephirah on the Tree of Life. As the densest sphere, Malkuth is the realm of physical manifestation and the Bride of the Microprosopus. In this inverse grading, she is the shadow of the Shekinah—not the holy indwelling presence but the crust of matter that hides it. This aligns with the Qabalistic teaching that the lowest emanations contain the most potential for impurity.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Her astrological attribution is Earth (the element), specifically the passive, receptive, and material aspect. In planetary terms, this corresponds to the sphere of Saturn in its most constrained form (the outermost visible planet, cold and dense) or, alternatively, to the Moon in its phase of obscurity. She is the terminus of the descending current, where spirit is most heavily veiled.

Historical context

The representation of the material world as a “woman” or “harlot” has deep roots in Gnostic literature, most famously in the Apocryphon of John, where the archons create a counterfeit spirit to ensnare the divine light. In the Zohar, the Lilith figure—first wife of Adam—becomes a demonic entity of lust and obstruction. Crowley synthesized these threads: in 777, the “Evil Woman” appears on the line of Malkuth as the tenth and most material grade, linking her to the Sitra Ahra (the Other Side). She is also related to the Tarot card The Universe (XXI) in its shadow aspect, as the dancing figure who both reveals and conceals the ultimate secret. Notably, this figure is not unique to Crowley; Éliphas Lévi wrote of the “phantasm of the Shekinah” that lures the unprepared magician. In the Goetia, she echoes the Queen of the Sabbath—the swarthy, beautiful demoness who tempts with false promises. The “Evil Woman” thus synthesizes multiple traditions: the Qabalistic klipot, the Gnostic Sophia Prunikos (the fallen wisdom), and the alchemical putrefactio stage, where the materia is blackened before rebirth.

In the Liber 777 table, the Evil Woman sits at the junction of several columns on the Malkuth line—her corresponding angelic order is the Nahemoth (the “Pleasant Ones,” a class of qlippothic demons), and her demon is Lilith herself. She is the final gate of the infernal path, the “Woman of Whoredom” who must be confronted and integrated, not simply rejected. Her name in the column is deliberately stark, a mirror to the sacred “Bride” of the holy Qabalist. To ignore her is to remain bound; to comprehend her is to see through her veil.
