English of Col. VIII., Lines 1-10 · Chokmah

Hinderers

The Hinderers are the formless, dual contending forces that stand at the very threshold of manifestation. The name translates from the root idea of 'those who obstruct' or 'those who delay,' and in the context of the Qabalistic system they represent the first principle of resistance that emerges from the Absolute. At the level of Chokmah, which is the first outpour of divine energy, the Hinderers are not fallen or evil beings but the necessary polar opposition that allows any act of creation to occur—the 'no' that gives shape to the divine 'yes.'

Position on the Tree of Life

This class of being is placed at Chokmah, the second Sephirah, which is the Sphere of Wisdom and the first movement of the divine will. At this scale step, the Hinderers are the most abstract form of obstruction; they have not yet assumed the more defined demonic characters found lower on the Tree. They are the raw potential of opposition, the dual contending forces that are the first differentiation from the unity of Kether.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Chokmah is assigned to the zodiac, specifically to the sphere of the fixed stars. The Hinderers thus partake of the impersonal, revolutionary, and expansive quality of this Sephirah. Their action is not planetary in the limited sense but cosmic and cyclic—they are the forces that 'hinder' the direct descent of light by giving it form and limit, much as the wheel of the zodiac conditions the flow of stellar energy.

Historical context

The concept of Hinderers appears in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's teachings on the Qlippoth, the 'shells' or unbalanced forces that correspond to the Sephiroth. In the original index to Liber 777, the column titled 'English of Col. VIII., Lines 1-10' lists these names for the demonic orders associated with each Sephirah. At Kether, the order is the Dual Contending Forces (the Hinderers proper); at Chokmah, the same phrase appears as the primary designation. The term is likely derived from the Hebrew root עכב (ayin-kaf-bet), meaning 'to hinder, detain, or obstruct.' These are the first of the 'unbalanced forces' that, in Kabbalistic cosmology, must be 'shattered' or 'exiled' so that the worlds can be established. They represent the primal inertia that the creative impulse must overcome—a necessary and primordial resistance, not yet the personified evil of lower spheres.

In the table of 777, the Hinderers are listed at Scale Step 2 (Chokmah) as the English rendering of the Hebrew demonic name found in Column VIII. They are the first fully differentiated obstruction, standing between the pure unity of the Three Zeros (0) and the defined Concealers of Binah. Their presence at this level indicates that even the highest created wisdom contains within itself the seed of opposition, which will unfold into the more complex demonic hierarchies below.
