G

G is the English equivalent of the third Hebrew letter Gimel (ג) as recorded in Column LI of Liber 777, serving as the transliterated glyph for the Path of the Moon on the Tree of Life.

Position on the Tree of Life

G, representing Gimel, occupies Path 13 (the scale step). This is the first of the three horizontal paths on the Tree, bridging Kether (the Crown) and Tiphareth (Beauty). It is called the "Connecting Intelligence" in the Sepher Yetzirah, and its function is to convey the influx from the highest supernal source directly into the heart of the microcosm. Unlike the vertical paths that move between adjacent spheres, the Gimel path cuts across the Abyss, forming a direct current between the formless and the formed.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

The letter G (Gimel) corresponds to the Moon, not to the lunar sphere Yesod (which is the ninth Sephirah). In the 777 schema, this distinction is critical: the Moon is the astrological planet—the orb of change, illusion, and fertility—while Yesod is the sphere that receives and transmits lunar force. The Moon's glyph (a crescent) is said to be shaped like a camel's hump, linking back to the letter-name Gimel meaning "camel." The lunar nature of this path is reflective, cyclical, and receptive, governing dreams, mystery, and the veil between consciousness and the unconscious.

Historical Context

The letter G has a layered history in esoteric alphabets. In Hebrew, Gimel is the third letter, its form said to derive from a Proto-Sinaitic glyph for a throw stick or a camel. The Zohar (II:77b) expounds that Gimel represents the rich man who runs to give charity (the Daleth, the fourth letter, being the poor man). In the Hermetic tradition, the letter G appears as a cipher for the Great Work—"the ritual of the G he should use" (Liber AL vel Legis I:46), where it is identified with the Moon, the number 9, and the zodiacal path of the Dog (Sirius). In the Cipher of the Book of the Law, the letter G stands for the card of The Moon (ATU XVII) and the sound of the letter is counted as a vowel-like consonant, related to the guttural class. Crowley, in The Book of Thoth, notes that the Moon path is "the path of the child of the Great Ones" and that its English letter G is the key to the "Silence" that precedes the Word.

In the 777 table at this step, the letter G appears in Column LI as the standard English transliteration of the Hebrew Gimel. It is associated with the number 9 (the lunar sphere of Yesod), the color silver (the lunar hue), and the magical weapon of the Wand of the Priests (the lunar wand). The corresponding god-form is the Thoth-form of the Moon, and the perfume is camphor or jasmine.
