P
P is the sixteenth letter of the most common alphabets descended from Phoenician, and in Hebrew it is Pe (פּ, with a dagesh) or Phe (פ without). Its original pictograph was a mouth, and the letter’s basic meaning is “mouth” or “speech.” In the Kabbalistic system of Liber 777, P occupies a specific place as the phonetic token assigned to the twenty-seventh path of the Tree of Life.
Position on the Tree of Life
Path 27 is the twenty-seventh of the Thirty-Two Paths, and it connects a lower sephirah to the others in a unique route on the Tree. The letter P (working as Pe or its final form) is the emblem of this path, carrying the number 80 in standard Hebrew gematria or 800 when written as final Pe. In the Tree’s diagram, Path 27 runs between Netzach and Yesod, bridging the spheres of Victory and Foundation.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In the correspondences worked out by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and set down in Crowley’s 777, the letter P—as Pe—is directly linked to the planet Mars. This gives the path a fierce, active, and assertive quality. The energy is martial, forceful, and penetrative, matching the sharp sound of the letter itself and its association with the mouth that speaks, commands, or rebukes.
Historical context
Pe has a long history in Hebrew mystical literature. The Sefer Yetzirah calls it the letter that “rules over speech” and assigns it to the month of Av, a sign of heat and passion. The Zohar often plays on the shape of Pe, seeing the closed mouth (the final form) as representing hidden wisdom while the open mouth (standard Pe) reveals it aloud. In European magical alphabets, P retained its sound and planetary link. By the time of the Golden Dawn, the English letter P was treated as a direct alternative for Pe in practical table work, especially when writing English names or words in ritual contexts. Crowley’s Liber 777 simply formalized this usage: on Path 27, the English letter P stands for the whole body of Mars correspondences—the red planet’s metals, stones, perfumes, and magical formulas.
In table 777, the English equivalent for this path is given as “P.” The entry stands alone: a single letter that carries the weight of the mouth, speech, and the planet of war.” }```json
