X
X is the name of the twenty-fifth path in the Hermetic Qabalah, a glyph of the receptive and generative side of the divine force. The letter belongs to the second half of the Semitic alphabet and is usually transliterated Samekh. Its literal meaning is “prop” or “support,” and the shape of the letter originally represented a tent‑peg, the pin that holds the fabric taut. At its deepest level Samekh is the pillar that upholds the heavens.
Position on the Tree of Life
Path 25 runs directly from Chesed (Gedulah), the fourth sphere of Mercy, to Tiphereth, the sixth sphere of Beauty. It is the central path of the Pillar of Mildness, connecting the expansive force of Jupiter with the solar harmony that balances the whole Tree. The number 25 itself, the square of 5, points to the kernel of life within the mother letter Heh, and to the cycle of the year as measured by the lunar months.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In the Golden Dawn system X is attributed to the planet Saturn, the slowest and most distant of the classical planets. Saturn represents structure, limitation, and the threshing floor of time—the support that can also be a crushing weight. This paradoxical nature (prop and destroyer) is exactly the root meaning of the letter: the tent‑peg both secures the tent and can be driven into the ground to break it.
Historical context
Samekh is the fifteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, occupying the very centre of the sequence—the point of balance. In the Sefer Yetzirah it is said that God made Samekh king over the sense of smell, and bound to it the sign of the Ram (Aries) in the zodiac. However, the Golden Dawn shifted this attribution decisively to Saturn, under the influence of the geomantic figure Via, which is a straight line (the path connecting two equal pillars) and also the glyph of the ring‑pass‑not. In late‑medieval Kabbalistic manuscripts Samekh is the letter that “bears up the falling,” the support that prevents the supernal lights from dissolving into the abyss. By the time of Liber 777, this symbolism had been condensed into a single cell: the table entry simply reads “X,” the Roman numeral that stands for ten, the number of completion and the final sphere Malkuth. The letter thus ties the highest (Kether, the crown) to the lowest (Malkuth, the kingdom) through the path of the Tzaddik, the righteous one.
777 gives the following correspondences for the same object on other scales: on the Tree of Life it is the path that receives the number 25; in the Yetziratic world it is the letter Samekh; in the astrological sphere it is the planet Saturn; in the geomantic world it is the figure of Via; among the Hebrew letters it is the fifteenth letter of the alphabet, and in the English alphabet it is the letter S. The Roman numeral X stands at the door of the path that turns the ring of the year. On the page for Path 25 in Liber 777 the entry simply states “X,” the sign that the hidden support of all things is the same force that appears in the solid sphere of Saturn.
