Numeration of Col. LI. · Path 11

1

The number 1 is the Monad, the first principle, the indivisible unit from which all other numbers and all existence derives. In Greek philosophy, the Monas is not a number in the arithmetic series but the source of all number; Plotinus describes the One as the simple, transcendent source that is beyond being and intellect. In Pythagorean tradition, the Monad is the seed of all things, the point that generates the line, the plane, and the solid, and is identified with the creative principle, the Nous or divine intellect. It is the symbol of unity, identity, and the absolute origin that precedes duality.

Position on the Tree of Life

The number 1 corresponds to the first Sephirah, Kether (the Crown), which is at the head of the Tree, directly below the three veils of negative existence (Ain, Ain Soph, Ain Soph Aur). Kether is the first emanation, the point of beginning within the void. As the crown, it represents the first will, the point of concentration of limitless light into a single, undifferentiated unity. It is from this unitary point that all the other Sephiroth descend, making the number 1 the root of the entire qabalistic system. All other numbers on the Tree are contained within it virtually, as the number 1 contains the whole arithmetical series in potentia.

Historical Context

The number 1 has been venerated as the principle of unity across multiple mystical traditions. In the I Ching, the first hexagram, Ch'ien (The Creative), is composed entirely of unbroken lines and represents the initiating, creative power. In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the first sutra (योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः) begins the system with the definition of yoga, establishing a first principle for spiritual practice. In medieval Jewish qabalah, the number 1 is associated with the Sephirah Kether, which is described as the 'most hidden of all hidden things,' the level of pure will and the initial point of emanation. The Book of Bahir speaks of the first number as the source from which the others issue, like a stream from its source. In the Western esoteric tradition, 1 is linked to the element of Primal Fire in its aspect as the hidden spark, and to the divine name Eheieh (אהיה), 'I Am,' which signifies the self-existent, timeless unity of the Godhead.

Closing

In Liber 777, the number 1 appears as the numerical value assigned to the Sephirah Kether in Column LI (the numeration of the Sephiroth and Paths). This assignment places the number 1 at the apex of the qabalistic hierarchy, identifying it with the singular, unmanifest source from which the entire Tree of Life is generated.

Interactive hints

  • Hint

The number 1 is the only integer that is its own multiplicative identity (n × 1 = n), reflecting the nature of the One as the unchanging source.

  • Hint

In Pythagorean number symbolism, the Monad is associated with the perfect, indivisible point, the seed of all subsequent numbers.
