Numeration of Col. LI. · Netzach
5
Five is the number of the pentagram, the fivefold star that has served as a microcosmic glyph from Babylon to the Hermetic orders. In gematria, five is Heh, the first simple letter of the Tetragrammaton, representing the window or breath of revelation. The root of 'five' in Hebrew, Hamesh, shares its consonants with the word for 'breastplate' — the garment of judgement worn by the High Priest. Five is therefore the number of active severity, the force that differentiates and judges. It is the digit of the outstretched hand, the hamsa, and the number of limbs from the torso.
Position on the Tree of Life
At the scale step of Netzach (Victory), the number 5 stands in the column of Numeration. Netzach is the seventh sephirah, sphere of Venus, but its number in this column is not its own sphere's value. Rather, 5 appears here as the numeration assigned to that sephirah, drawn from the traditional ordering of the Sepher Yetzirah. In that system, the five letters of the double class correspond to the seven planets and the five fingers, and five itself links to the power of Geburah (Severity) on the Pillar of Force.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Five is the number of Mars — the planet of Geburah, the fifth sephirah. In the schema of Liber 777, the value 5 at Netzach serves as a harmonic bridge: Netzach is Venus, but the number 5 is Martial. This tension is deliberate; it shows that numeration is not the same as astrological attribution. The number is a current of force, and here it channels the severity of Geburah into the victory of Netzach, tempering triumph with judgement.
Historical context
The earliest appearance of five as a sacred number is in the Sumerian and Babylonian star-lists, where the five visible planets defined a celestial pentagram. The Pythagoreans swore by the pentagram as a symbol of health, and the Greek letter epsilon (5th letter) was inscribed at Delphi as the symbol of the number five — 'Thou art' (Ei). In Jewish mysticism, the Sepher Yetzirah assigns five doubles to five senses, five fingers, and five directions (including the centre). By the time of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, five had become the number of the pentagram ritual, the elemental spirit, and the formula of the Microprosopus — the Lesser Countenance, whose beard is of five parts. In Crowley's 777, the numeration entry for Netzach is simply '5', a raw integer that condenses all these traditions into a single point on the column.
In table 777, under Column LI at the step of Netzach, the number 5 stands as the plain numeration of that sephirah according to the Yetziratic scale. It is not the planet or the god-name of the sphere, but the abstract integer that aligns the seventh sephirah with the fifth letter Heh and the fifth sphere Geburah. The cell reads: 5.
