Numeration of Col. LI. · Path 16

400

Four hundred (400) is the gematric value of the letter Tau (ת), the final letter of the Hebrew alphabet. As a number, it represents completion, a circuit closed, and the material universe in its densest and most fixed form—the threshold of the physical world, often associated with Saturn and with the element of Earth in its most concrete aspect.

Position on the Tree of Life

400 corresponds to Path 16, which in the Western esoteric tradition links Hod (Splendor) to Malkuth (Kingdom). This path lies at the base of the Tree, channeling the forms and structures of the intellectual sphere (Hod) down into the material world (Malkuth). The number 400 here signifies the final, crystallized expression of form—matter made measurable and divisible.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the 777 system, 400 is not directly assigned a planet or sign at this step. However, through its letter Tau, it is intimately tied to Saturn (Shabbathai) and the element of Earth. Saturn’s qualities of restriction, boundary, and time mirror the function of 400 as the limits of the physical universe.

Historical context

In Jewish gematria, 400 carries heavy symbolic weight. The patriarch Abraham is said to have been told that his descendants would be strangers in a land not theirs for 400 years (Genesis 15:13), a period of trial and gestation before the exodus. The same number appears in the dimensions of the Tabernacle’s court: the length of the outer court was 100 cubits, but the total perimeter—the boundary—was 400 cubits (Exodus 27:18). In rabbinic tradition, the world is divided into four quarters, and 400 is the square of 20, the number of Kaph, the palm of the hand: a measure of human grasp and limitation.

In Kabbalistic terms, Tau is the seal of truth (Emet), and its value 400 completes the three-letter root for truth: Aleph (1) + Mem (40) + Tau (400) = 441 (21 squared). The number 400 thus represents the signature of the divine on the material plane—the ‘seal of creation.’ In the Sepher Yetzirah, Tau is assigned to the element of Water in one arrangement, but in later Hermetic Qabalah, it becomes Earth, the fixed, final state.

In alchemical symbolism, 400 appears as the cube of 4 (4×4×4 = 64), but more importantly as the square of 20: the number of the Fool (0) multiplied by itself in the material direction. The number 400 is the ‘great square,’ representing the four elements fully manifest at the base of the Tree—the physical universe as a closed system.

In the 777 table itself, 400 sits at step 16 (the Vau of Tetragrammaton in the Path), between 500 (Geburah) and 800 (Tiphereth). It is the numeration of the 32nd Path (Tau) in the traditional Sepher Yetzirah ordering, though elsewhere the same numeral appears for other correspondences.

In the Table of 777

At this step, the numeral 400 appears in Column LI (Numeration of Col. LI) as the value for the 16th Path. It is the last of the simple letters in the scale of values, anchoring the sequence that runs from 0 through the spheres and paths to the final, complete number of the alphabet.
