400

The number 400 is the gematric value of the final letter in both the Hebrew and Arabic alphabets: Tau (ת) in Hebrew, meaning “mark” or “sign,” and Ta (ت) in Arabic, the third letter of the modern alphabet but the twenty‑second in the abjad order. In both traditions, 400 symbolizes completion, the end of a cycle, and the threshold between the material and the spiritual.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, 400 corresponds to Path 32, the thirty‑second and final path. This path connects Malkuth (the Kingdom) to Yesod (the Foundation) and is attributed to the Hebrew letter Tau. As the last path, it represents the culmination of the entire Tree—the point where the divine energy returns to its source after traversing all previous stages.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Path 32 is ruled by Saturn (Shabbathai in Hebrew), the slowest and most distant planet. Saturn’s attributes of limitation, structure, and time resonate with the number 400’s sense of finality and boundary. In the Arabic system, the letter Ta is also linked to the element of Earth and the concept of sealing or completing a work.

Historical context

The use of 400 as a sacred number appears in multiple ancient traditions. In Hebrew scripture, the letter Tau originally had a cruciform shape, and its value 400 is often associated with the cross or mark of protection (Ezekiel 9:4). In Arabic abjad, the letter Ta (ت) carries the same numerical weight and is used in mystical calculations (hisab al‑jummal) to encode divine names and phrases. The number 400 also appears in the dimensions of Noah’s Ark (300 cubits long, 50 wide, 30 high—totaling 400 in some interpretations) and in the years of Israel’s sojourn in Egypt (Genesis 15:13). In the Qabalistic tradition, 400 is the value of the word “Tau” itself (ת = 400) and is seen as the seal of the universe, the final letter that encloses all previous letters.

In Liber 777, the number 400 appears in the row for the Numeration of the Arabic Alphabet at scale step 32 (Path 32). This placement directly links the Arabic letter Ta to the Hebrew letter Tau, to Saturn, and to the closing of the Tree of Life. The cell value 400 thus serves as a numeric key that unifies the two alphabetic systems at the same terminal point on the Qabalistic diagram.
