Numeration of Arabic Alphabet · Path 12

2

The number 2 is the Dyad, the great separator. In the Neopythagorean cosmology that heavily influenced the Hermetic Qabalah, the Monad (1) is the undifferentiated source; the Dyad (2) is the first emanation of matter and the principle of duality itself—light and dark, male and female, active and passive, limit and the limitless. It introduces the possibility of relationship, of otherness, and thus of all subsequent manifestation. It is the number of the second Sephirah, Chokmah, the Supernal Father, whose name means 'Wisdom.' Just as Chokmah is the first point of active force, the number 2 is the first number that can be added to itself, generating the entire arithmetic series through repetition and combination.

Position on the Tree of Life

This numeration corresponds to the second Sephirah, Chokmah, and is assigned to the 12th Path of the Tree of Life. This Path connects Kether (the Crown, 1) to Tiphereth (Beauty, 6), and it is the uppermost horizontal path on the Pillar of Mercy. Its Hebrew letter is Beth (ב), whose literal meaning is 'house'—a vessel or container shaped by the two-dimensional dualities that the Dyad makes possible.

Historical context

The abjad numeral system, in which the number 2 is assigned the letter Beth, is the foundation of Jewish gematria. However, the assignment of 2 to the Path of Beth in the specific schema of Liber 777 draws directly from the Sepher Yetzirah, the foundational text of Jewish mysticism. In that book, the 22 Hebrew letters are divided into three groups, and Beth is one of the twelve 'Simple' letters, each associated with a month, a human faculty, and one of the twelve zodiacal signs. The value 2, therefore, is not merely a quantity; within the Qabalistic framework it represents a discrete spiritual location—the 'house' of the Dyad—on a map of divine consciousness.

The Arabic abjad that shares this value is more than a simple borrowing. In Islamic esoteric traditions, the number 2 corresponds to the letter Bāʾ (ب), the first letter of the Qur'an's first verse (Bismillah). In Sufi metaphysics, the Bāʾ is said to contain the entire creation within its single dot underneath, just as the Dyad contains the potential of all multiplicity beneath its simple duality.

In table row CLXXXIV of Liber 777, the numeral 2 stands as the celestial address of Chokmah. It is the numeric key that unlocks the formula of the Father, the dynamic wisdom that initiates the process of creation by dividing the undivided light.
