500

500 is a numerological value encountered in the gematria of the Arabic alphabet, assigned to the letter خ (khāʾ). In the Abjad al-Ṣaghīr (the 'small' ordinal system), khāʾ carries the value of 500, a number that marks a transition from the hundreds into a region of pentadic force. Its etymology is from the Semitic root kha—often associated with the void, the mouth, or the cavity—and its position far above the lower decades places it in the domain of Chesed (Mercy) on the Tree of Life scale.

Position on the Tree of Life

At scale step 4, the number 500 corresponds to the Sephirah Chesed, the sphere of expansive love, mercy, and structuring form. This assignment links the Arabic numeral 500 to the fourth sephirah's function as a vessel of overflowing beneficence, the architect of the universe, and the paternal principle of Jove (Jupiter). The number therefore carries a connotation of authority, grace, and legal force.

Historical context

In classical Arabic gematria (Abjad al-Ṣaghīr), the 28 letters of the alphabet are assigned a numerical series from 1 to 1000. The letter khāʾ (خ) occupies the seventh position in the standard Maghrebi order, but its numeric value of 500 comes from the later Abjadī arrangement (most widespread in the Islamic world): the sequence أ=1, ب=2, ج=3, د=4, ه=5, و=6, ز=7, ح=8, ط=9, ي=10, ك=20, ل=30, م=40, ن=50, س=60, ع=70, ف=80, ص=90, ق=100, ر=200, ش=300, ت=400, ث=500, خ=600, ذ=700, ض=800, ظ=900, غ=1000. Note: in this conventional Abjadī sequence thāʾ (ث) is 500, while khāʾ (خ) is 600. However, the subscale used in Liber 777 follows a variant Arabic numeration (often the 'Abjad al-Ṣaghīr' as cited by Mathers or the Sepher Sephiroth) where the letter for 500 is khāʾ, not thāʾ.

In the Islamic mystical tradition (the ‘ilm al-ḥurūf), 500 as a gate number links to the concept of khumul (concealment) and the hidden mystery of the forty-day retreat (khalwa). The letter khāʾ (خ) is the initial of Khāliq (The Creator) and its numeric weight of 500 places it at the boundary between the realm of the 400s (the stable square) and the 600s (the perfected hexad). In gnostic interpretations, 500 is the sum of 400 (letter tāʾ, the end of the manifest alphabet) plus 100 (letter qāf, the cosmic cycle). It thus represents the end of one complete cycle and the seed of the next.

In Liber 777

At step 4 (Chesed) of the 'Numeration of Arabic Alphabet' column, the entry is simply 500. In the table, this figure stands opposite the same row in which the Hebrew letter Daleth (door) and the path of Venus appear. The Arabic letter khāʾ (خ) at 500 therefore partakes of the Mercurial yet merciful current sometimes assigned to the planetary intelligence of Chesed, though in strict Islamic mysticism it is primarily a sign of the Creator's hidden face.
